Is the Onkyo 606 better than the 507 and why. Idk but they seem the same to me or did I miss something...

5.1 means you can have 5 surround speakers (center, 2 fronts, 2 rears) and then a sub. 7.1 means you can have 7 surround speakers plus your sub.

With the 507, there are connections for 5 main speakers and one subwoofer. The five speakers are front left and right, center, and left and right surrounds. These 5 plus the subwoofer are what's called a 5.1 setup.

With the 606, there are connections for 7 main speakers and one subwoofer. You get the same 5 as listed above plus left and right surround back channels. These 7 plus the subwoofer are what's called a 7.1 setup.

The 606 also pushes 15 more watts per channel (speaker) than the 607 does.

EDIT. Rblu-Dblu beat me to it.

5.1 is the amount of speakers you can hook up to that receiver Left - center - right and left surround and a right surround and a sub .

7.1 adds to more speakers in the rear of the room so the sound is completely around you.

You all beat me to it

Ok cool you guys rock. Cuz I just got the 507 and am in the process of getting it all hooked up. I only have 5 speakers anyway so its cool for now besides my room isnt all that big I wouldnt know where I would fit 7 Speakers.

Other problem is that the 507 doesn't decode HD audio that I know of. Depending on your player, that's not an issue, but it's something to keep in mind.

The ability to decode lossless audio is gradually finding its way into "lower" models every time new ones come out.

Most players do. A lot of people just like having the receiver do the decoding, but with a lower end receiver you're probably better off using the player's DAC.

The PS3 does not bit-stream the audio out to the receiver, so you're only option is to have the PS3 decode it.

Which is better is up for debate for sure. I prefer to bitstream, & I like seeing my receiver light up with TrueHD & DTS-HD MSTR.

If you're in a situation where you can use either component (BD player or receiver) to decode then you should experiment with it both ways and see which sounds better to you. You may not be able to tell a difference.
