Default Surge Protectors

I have some pretty nice equipment now and i still have not upgraded my surge protector. I have a decent one from radio shack but ive been browsing around and a lot of sites recommend like "An AC power conditioner". I am Still new to this, and i am not sure if i should buy that, or is there something else. Any recommendations would be helpful.

As linked above, the Leviton in-wall protectors are a very good product if you have a little diy in you.

$100-$200, depending on where you find them. I think a lot of users have that exact model in their systems by now.

There are three basic power products people use. The first is the plain old surge protector. This is a must-have for anyone who wants to protect their equipment from the kind of electrical surges that come from lightning strikes. They range in quality so just make sure yours can handle a good surge. The higher the Joules load the better.

The second device is called a power conditioner or voltage regulator. You'll want one of these if your power source is irregular. It caps the max voltage and boosts it when it dips. In theory smoothing out the voltage is easier on your equipment. I won't say these are useless, but I am not aware of any measurable benefit of regulated voltage. (EDIT: Rather, the exact benefit is difficult to measure.)

The third level of power protection is what's called a UPS. This is a battery backup so if you lose power completely you'll have between a few seconds and a couple of minutes to shut down your more sensitive equipment manually. These are a must-have for projectors since they require a cool-down period when powering off.

What you need depends entirely on your power supply and the equipment you have. If you live close to a substation, have buried lines and no major consumers nearby then you may be just fine with what you've got.
