Default calibration

Should I have someone professionally calibrate my Panny pz800? I have heard THX mode is the closest to being calibrated, but that mode seems dull to me.

any tv can benefit from being calibrated by a professional, it all boils down to the owners choice whether or not to buy it.

You could start off with the calibration settings from tweaktv.com or CNET, or do it yourself with the DVE HD disc. Then compare it to the THX setting. If that fails you could go with professional calibration.

Default Professional Calibration

Hello

Just a moment for an important and significant bit of information.

Without a professional calibration, you have no reference to make any judgement regarding picture quality; especially what you like or dislike, or prefer for that matter.

Something to keep in mind though, is that a proper professional calibration, is correct to industry display standards, that the entire hollywood production and broadcast industry are to reference to the original content and it's way to us.

If you do not like what is supposed to be as originally intended, then at least realize it, but it is correct, irrespective of any subjective interpretation.

I should add here that taking settings from other's calibrations, whether a friend or online source, is entirely without merit for any realization of what is intended, as there are variables of a professional calibration, that such arbitrary exchange of settings information from anthers display and environment do not carry over to another display and environment. This may not seem important, but it definitely is; if you have any concern for proper display of the original and good picture quality, therefore realizing the best and proper picture quality of your display.

Additionally, using a 'so called' calibration disc, believing it to be a 'calibration', is seriously erroneous. While professional calibrators use the same discs as part of their work, it is primarily for the proper set up of front panel controls, for proper set up of color and black level and white level. To believe that it is more, is simply untrue, and the significant issues of calibration are far beyond what is importantly accomplished by 'front panel controls'..

To be clear; such discs are extremely useful, resulting in considerable improvement to any display. However, they are erroneously generally perceived to be calibrations at home, which is entirely untrue, diminishing both perception and appreciation of a proper professional calibration, of which there is no substitute.

Thank You

You're right when you say a professional calibration is the best way to calibrate your TV. However, calibration settings obtained via other means can still do a pretty good job of achieving good picture quality as well. As when you relative tune a guitar, the settings may not be perfectly in tune, but they can still look good if they're in tune relative to one another. And since our sensory memory is so poor, you can have a poorly calibrated TV look "just fine" as long as you aren't comparing it side by side with a TV that is calibrated properly.

Default Professional Calibration?

Hello Again

Should you have your display Professionally Calibrated?

Yes; most definitely!

Your Panasonic 800 Series is one of the best displays ever offered; without a professional calibration, you simply are not even close to realizing what it is capable of regarding high quality picture quality.

My apology that I did not address your question directly in my previous post
.

Thank You

Hello

I understand and appreciate your point, however, without a properly calibrated display to reference to; any perspective or judgement is without context, or merit for that matter.

Additionally, the closer that a display is to calibrated, the more significant an impact the un-calibrated issues become in my experience.

Having said all of this; I agree that it is always best to at least try to improve picture quality of any display by any rational means, so long as a full understanding that only a proper display calibration by a proficient professional is realized as a calibrated display.

The most serious problem in display picture quality today, is how many do not have a calibrated display, especially, those that mistakenly perceive that they have a calibrated display, simply sharing display settings, and using the many test signals available on both DVD and Blu-ray, without an understanding that this definitely is not a calibration, using these means incompletely.

Actually, those discs, as originally intended, were for the purpose of providing a basis of understanding why a professional calibration should be appreciated and considered, rather as an end unto themselves. This is a very serious oversight by all involved.

In closing; only a properly professionally calibrated display can be considered calibrated; all else is something else approximating, whether for better or worst.

Thank You

I would heartily recommend it. Just had my new 65 inch panasonic plasma calibrated and it really looks amazing. I have had all three of my displays calibrated over the years and my first Toshiba RPTV is still going strong after 15 years (my sister bought it) and my second Toshiba is also still looking exactly as it did after being calibrated 7 years ago. And have had no problems with any of them. The panny's picture just looks so much crisper and the color richer. What's also nice is I was able to have the display calibrated for my room ( I have a totally dedicated room with complete light control in the basement) and Doug Weil, the calibrator, made the adjustments I needed for that environment on all three inputs. I think that it is always money well-spent.

Actually, although there are educational elements included on those discs (i.e. DVE HD), those discs are intended to be used to calibrate your TV. That is why they include test patterns, tutorials on how to use the test patterns and a blue screen to be used when adjusting the color.
