You are calibrating your tv's video setting. You play around with the colors, brightness, contrast, backlight, sharpness etc., to get the best picture.

so its not worth it to pay someone to hook it up to a lil machine for calibration. I wasnt sure if it did things to the tv besides pic settings.

if you've got money to burn, do it. i personally wouldn't. there is a business for it and some users see a benefit, but i don't.

I've seen a lot of threads on other forums dedicated to specific TV's. Users usually post the best settings for different scenarios. I haven't found a thread yet for my mitsubishi, but I managed to find a good setting for myself after playing around with the video settings. I don't see what the purpose of someone else telling me what a good picture should look like. I play around with the settings myself enough to find a good picture that i like.

I learned the hard way that it is not worth it. I had a guy come and do it and $300 bucks later I had a slightly better picture. Calibrating my TV was def worth doing but $300 is a ridiculous amount to spend for it. If I could do it all over agian I would have just bought the callibration Blu-ray that will soon be released.

at least before the blu-ray calibration cd comes out you can use your Rat bd. it comes with a calibration tool under video. I used it and it helped.

There are calibration screens on the Loinsgate T2 Blu Ray and also on the Rat-something Blu Ray. Damn I'll never learn how to spell that movies title.

Basic calibration sets black and white level and if you set can be adjusted for hue and tint it sets those too. More detailed calibration can set color temp, overscan, geometry,.. and other lower level stuff.

I've used the Avia disc for awhile and been very happy. Will buy the BD version when it comes this year.

D65 calibration settings on a X3500 (the European name of XBR4).

Quote:
While these values provided D65 images for my set, they might not do so for yours because of different input source, ambient lighting and of course possible variation between individual units. Nevertheless they should provide a good starting point for achieving picture quality that comes close to the standard used in film studios.

This isn't even the tip of the iceberg. Calibration is a whole lot more involved that your tv's contrast and brightness settings.

if you are having trouble with calibrating your tv, go to avsforum.com. i learned a lot about callibration from those guys over there. great website as long as you don't get tangled up in the hdd vd/blu-ray mess over there.

Don't most of the Sony Blu-rays come with a calibration tool as part of the disc (with the hidden "easter egg" SONY).

Calibrating your set and adjusting the settings with a "blu-ray calibration disc" are two totally different things. Adjustments will change the picture, while a calibration will reduce your TVs energy consumption while delivering a better picture. There about 6,486,123,751 different threads about this already. Getting a tv calibrated is a good idea, not necessary, but a good idea.
