PS3 optical or hdmi? - Blu-ray Forum

I have a PS3 hooked up only through the hdmi to my onkyo 706 then to my display. I am just curious if it is beneficial to hook up the optical to my receiver from the PS3 to get the dolby digital over the speakers when playing Games such as MLB 09 the show, or does dolby digital get converted by the ps3 first and then sent to the receiver through hdmi???

HDMI will carry everything Dolby or DTS to your receiver. Set you PS3 to, I believe, PCM for audio out. Everything will take care of itself after that.

I was in the same boat before. you wanna keep your HDMI and go from PS3>Reciever>Display. And set your audio settigns to HDMI and PCM. The PS3 will take care of everything. And you wil want your receiver to display as multichannel.

For games and for legacy DD 5.1 and DTS tracks on DVD it doesn't matter. You would set the PS3 to bitstream and the quality would be the same either way.

For lossless audio on Blu-ray, however, you have to use HDMI. Set the PS3 to decode the tracks itself and send PCM to your receiver. HDMI can transmit multichannel PCM while optical is limited to stereo.

thank you everyone for your help, i kind of figured the ps3 decoded the audio before sending it for video games over hdmi, cause thats how i use it for my blu rays. Thanks again
