Default Ps3 games in 720p

Has there ever been an explanation to why a majority of ps3 titles multi platform or not are 720p? Couples guys at gamestop were talking about prototype saying that it's 1080 on the other console but 720 on ps3. Also I noticed uncharted is like that too. Anyone know?

What really happens is on the xbox its 720p then ran through a scalier to rescale it at 1080p through its not really 1080p..

With the ps3 its the devs choice to scale it or not, generally the native resolution is the one the dev decided was best, in which performance and quality met there desired levels.

I prefer native personally.

There are actually several threads in the past about this very same issue.

I guess they want to leave 1080p to blu-ray. PS3 really does need to start producing games in this resolution to show that the system is almighty and that we the consumers are paying all this money so the system can be used as it was meant to be. Very few attempts have been made for games in 1080 that actually took a good amount of time developing thus far.

Alot of those games that say there 1080 are not really 1080, in reality its a tradeoff between performance and appearance, and sometimes that ballance does not let you have 1080p, it matters what the game is, and what the dev hoped to accomplish.

There are some games that did give a native 1080p signal but they are few and usually not very liked, a 1080p game can still look like crap, if the devs sacrificed appearance for 1080p...

Cheers.

99% of the games on the market are actually 720p or lower.

There's less than a handful of 360 games that render at anything above 1280x720. The PS3 has a fair number - several times what the 360 has, but still a small fraction of what's out there. Virtually all of the Xbox 360 games that claim 1080 are actually just rendering internally at a lower resolution and letting the 360 upscale the signal to 1080 (which is what your TV/receiver would do on its own anyhow).

The real reason for 720p versus 1080p is processing power. 1080p is twice as many pixels to push as 720p, so something usually has to give - either framerate, anti-aliasing, physics... something. Only rare titles like Virtua Tennis (which at its heart isn't a very complex game) can spare the extra processing power to render at full 1080 without undue sacrifices. That or titles that have been heavily optimized for the PS3 (i.e. WipeOut HD renders 1080 "most" of the time, for instance).

Uncharted is 720p, and 1080i...they just don't list it on the box because it was a last minute addition.

They are all 720p and the 360 upscales it to 1080p so people that don't know the technology will buy it.

You can't the CPU/GPU just can't push out 1080p over 30 frames per second to justify running at such a high resolution. PCs with decent hardware can do 1920x1200 fine in most games today but for the console guys you will need to just wait till the next generation.

A number of high quality native 1280x1080 to 1920x1080 games on PS3 say otherwise but you can't expect the majority of developers to approach graphics in a way that enables native 1080p without losing competitive quality in other areas. They struggle enough to keep up with the best at 720p or below or rather maximise quality at 720p only.

The GameStop guys don't understand the difference between native rendering and upscaling.

every game being played on the 360 is being upscaled to 1080p.

Not quite all. There's a few (i.e. less than a fistful) true native 1080p 360 games (FIFA Street 3, NBA Home Court, Sacred 2, Virtua Tennis 3).

There's over a dozen PS3 disc-based games that support true 1920x1080 resolution native, and another dozen or so that support 960x1080 with horizontal scaling. Add to that something like two dozen PSN games that support true 1920x1080.
