Why are some of the games only 720p?
A. Because the RSx graphics card although good, its not enough to handle such a task. B. The developers are still tinkering with the ps3 and how to maximize game graphics. C. Combo of both? NBA 2k8 has stuttering in the blacktop pickup games at 1080p. Devil May Cry4 although pretty I would of thought could handle 1080p. Anyways, no whining if it can't . But I'm just very curious and If and when I should expect more games in 1080p, especially Final Fantasy. Hope its not asked already Did a search (ps3 only 1080p) https://forum.blu-ray.com/search.php?searchid=508637 Ps3 only 720p https://forum.blu-ray.com/search.php?searchid=508649 Last edited by Kuraudo; 02-26-2008 at 02:40 AM. |

RAM issues, More effective use of resources like more dynamic lighting, flitering, anti-aliasing that in the end produce a more pleasing overall image. Basically 720p is half the pixels so they have to use half the horses (and more importantly half the RAM) to get something up on screen, so there's a lot more headroom to make things look good.
Yes the GPU struggles with those resolutions, that's why you find most PC users running a dual GPU that are going that high res Expect the vast majority of "big" games to run at 720p. While Final Fantasy may have 1080p cutscenes, don't expect the actual game to run there |

At the least, the game is upscaled to 1080p
even though the game is 720p. I've upscaled screenshots of games on my pc from 720p to 1080p and then rendered out native screenshots and the difference isn't too bad that way. But the ps3 upscaling looks even better than that. The upscaler on ps3 is quite amazing compare to most HTPCs |

Two factors...
Bandwidth from the BD given read speeds. Cell processors are just barely being worked out now. Most developers have no idea yet how to fully exploit the SPU's in Cell to maximize graphical output. They are far more versed in simply maximizing for the GPU. It's entirely possible for several SPU's to be attached to graphical assets and the game itself to run off much fewer SPU's. Once we see the new development tools, and those to come, in widespread use it should begin to show in new releases. Since development is such a long process I wouldn't expect to really see it all for another couple years; however, a couple big money dev houses will probably drop some sick stuff on the PS3 before long. I think Insomniac may be the first. |

as long as it plays blu rays in 1080p
![]() it's gonna take developers awhile to learn how to use the processing power in better ways...the video card can't really handle all the work they need to supplement the power with the cell once they learn how... |

MGS4 will be 1080p. It SEEMS to be one the most complex games, but it will be at that resolution. Therefore, the graphics card would not seem to be the issue. There are many other games out that are 1080p, but they are not that complex.
For instances, the Xbox 360 has more than a handful of games that are native 600 or 640p. A 640p resolution is around 200,000 pixels short of a 720p resolution. My theory is that very complex multi-platform games are limited to 640p resolution (a mainly Xbox 360 centric resolution due to the buffer) because of the 360's graphical limitations. That is why those games are just upscaled from that resolution to whatever resolution you want (that looks terrible on larger 1080 TVs). Also, it takes extra time to create a game in native 1080p. That adds to the cost of that title. That, also, prevents the PS3 from having a TON of 1080p games currently. |

The PS3 can do 1080p, all the devcos have to do is shove half the game to the HDD (or at least 20% of it), make each room/environment half the size they were going to do it and hopefully the HDD will load in the bits and pieces before you notice a lag in loading.
I don't really understand the necessity of 1080p myself, especially for my 40". Its not going to make a night and day difference to my gaming pleasure. You would need a super huge screen to see much of a difference to be honest. Everytime a developer says to himself "1080p or..".. "or" will usually win out. The only reason that NBA game is 1080p is because its an arena based game where little changes. If you want an FPS like Doom, where its all corridors and straight edges, 1080p is quite feasible. Take the game outdoors and expect draw distances to the horizon with no pop up, thats a tall order. |
