Default HDMI 1.4 has me confused

OK, here goes.. Preordered the PN58C8000 Samsung 3D plasma and Samsung Bluray player (Have the bluray player and glasses here, just waiting for the TV to ship) In looking at all the documentation for the TV itself I saw a blurb about how the TV might not work with HDMI vs 1.3 .. The bluray player has HDMI 1.4 out but no in, it has an optical in.

Here is my audio question. I'm using an Onkyo receiver that has 1.3 HDMI. Will I be able to connect it to the TV via HDMI and the 3D Bluray thru another one, or will I be stuck with optical. Will optical give me all the bells and whistles I want when watching a movie ? or playing a game on the PS3 ?

If your Bluray player has 2 HDMI's out, one for sound and one for video you'll be set. Just plug the one for sound into your receiver and the video into the TV. If you try and plug your bluray player into your receiver it'll strip out the 3d signal back to 2d.

There is only 1 3D Blu-ray player announced with 2 HDMIs out and that is the panny. So no he does not have 2 HDMIs out.

And back to the op no optical will not give you the higher codecs audio.

So then what to do ? Sounds like I'm kinda stuck with using optical audio doesn't it, because if I run 1.4 to the TV from the Bluray and 1.3 from the receiver to another HDMI port.. I'm not thinking it would work, will it

For now yes. You will need to wait until there is a 1.4 splitter avail for HDMI and use optical until then or buy a new receiver. Of course you can try and hook up the HDMI to your receiver and pass it along to your TV but there are reports that it disables 3D.

Ok, as an option, and I apologize for bringing this thread into a new area ...
what does everyone think of the new Pioneer 7.1 3D ready receivers that are set to come out ?? the VSX-920 lists for 399 and the 1020 lists for 549.
Obviously not the top of the line but after 2700 on the TV and 400 for the 3D Bluray player if I spend too much more, I have a feeling the wife is going to have me living in the box that the TV comes in....

I would recommend exchanging your Samsung Blu-ray player for the new Panasonic player, since it has dual HDMI outs. That way, you can have 3D video and lossless audio without swapping out your A/V receiver.

And I would love nothing more than to do that, the only hiccup there is, the only way to get the free 2 pairs of glasses and movie was to buy the samsung TV and 3DBR together on the same ticket. I could TRY exchanging it when the Panasonics become available, but not sure how much that would be liked by the folks at the store

Is it possible to connect your Blu-ray player to the TV via HDMI port 1 and then use the reverse audio, ARC, off the TV's HDMI port 2 to connect to the receiver and get the full sound? Probably if this is what the ARC is supposed to do you would have to enable some option to activate it, hopefully the TV's manual will explain this.

In looking at the Manual, ARC requires HDMI 1.4... so back to square 1... looks like a new Pioneer receiver will be on order with the TV ...
