Hello everyone,
this is my first post, and im sure wont be my last. im now part of the club with my first bd player it is a Magnavox nb500mg9 from walmart. so here's my problem: my tv is an older toshiba 65" theater wide its a nice set but only has component video in my a/v receiver is real old and needs to be replaced. I would like to add dolby true hd & dts hd to the theater , but wondering if I replaced my a/v receiver with a new one that decodes those formats would I be able to send my video from my bd player over component,to the tv , while at the same time sending the audio bit stream to the new a/v receiver for hd audio over the hdmi connection. Thanks in advance for help , and it is a pleasure to be part of this forum. -Shawn |

Yeah thats what I get for skimming, I guess it depends on the player. I honestly do not know if that player can do that. Your best bet is to go to the player forum here or at the avs forum and ask people with that player as I'm sure that it has come up before. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Are you talking about using HDMI for audio and then running component for video? I had that player for about a week and exchanged it.

Yep , thats exactly what im wondering if it can be done , if both ports are active at the same time (component out & hdmi out) then I would be golden with a new a/v receiver that decodes hd audio.

I don't know about that player specifically, but I do have a friend who has the opposite problem. He can't figure out how to get his HDMI sound to work so he uses optical for sound and HDMI for video. Granted, again, this is the PS3, so you will have to look in the manual to see if you player can support overriding the signal output. Theoretically, you should be able to run HDMI sound and component video if the player supports it. If you can't find out here or from the manual, call Magnavox and ask them.

Im really just guessing here but if you ran a HDMI to a HD receiver, then you probably could run component straight to the tv. I know the Magnavox has both outputs on it. That would give you the HD sound. It would be better if you also ran Hdmi out to your tv, but you said it doesnt have it.

Thats is exactly what I would like to do ... hd audio to new a/v receiver hdmi 1.3 and send video to older component only tv via component out of player ,providing this player outputs both at the same time. and thank you all for the quick replies

I am not sure if it will work. But, I know that I have my HD Directv box hooked up that way (HD Directv box hooked up directly component to the TV and also HDMI hooked up to my Onkyo PR-SC885 Pre/pro which in turn feeds through HDMI to my Pioneer Elite PRO111FD) so that I can watch the TV without the audio system. If you do do that however and it works, you may have to turn the sound off (mute the TV) while listening through the audio components. There is a lag time that I notice between the audio from the TV and the audio system.
