Default Confused

I'm confused about something. Sony has made several ps3 models. The first two at launch had ps1 and ps2 chips inside which gave the machine hardware support for ps1 and ps2 games. Starting with the 80 GB model, Sony went for software emulation, which would mean supporting ps1 and ps2 games without hardware. The latest model, the 40 GB has no support at all for ps2 games, although there has been some talk of adding in an emulator. Is software emulation and emulators the same thing?
