Default Why does Criterion lose the rights to certain title?
Apologies if this isn't the right forum for this question.

I emailed Criterion to find out why most of their Jean Pierre Melville movies are out of print (Le Doulos, Bob Le Flambeur, Army of Shadows etc.). The guy who emailed me back said they had lost the rights to those movies and, despite their best efforts, had been unable to get them back.

Any opinions as to why they can't get them back?

Why would a studio give Criterion the rights to films by a certain director and then decide to take them back? Is it a money issue of some kind?

Thoughts?
