Default Original Terminator Question

Best Buy has the original Terminator on sale this week. I was wondering if it's worth picking up or is a newer version coming soon like how T2 was handled?

Lowry Digital (the guys that worked on the Bond remasters) will be remastering Terminator 1 but there is no release date yet. Even after they are done, Cameron will have to approve it. I'm thinking it's still going to be a year away or at least a bit after Avatar comes out.

Might as well pick it up and sell it down the road. It's only 12.99 isn't it?

It's cheap and the quality is pretty decent. Just get it, I don't see this one being re-released for quite some time.

Yeah it is 12.99. I should have worded my question differently too. Is the picture quality good? I never bought the original T2 blu, but heard it was pretty bad. Is this the same for T1?

The mono track rocks. I wish they actually used the cops real voice in the beginning too. The voice over is way too deep...

Easily my favorite movie franchise. Not only does lack of a remastered original stop me from buying, it stops me from buying the rest.

Call me silly, but I want to see the original in HD before I watch the rest. I may not wait this one out, though.

Wouldn't setting your receiver/TV to mono do the same thing as having a mono track? Just wondering.

I bought it, and I did not realize it did no include the mono track which threw me for a loop. I want the mono track so this will be a double dip for me when it comes out.

so the Sony $12.99 version has uncompressed 5.1 sound, the Fox edition has Dolby Digital 5.1 and 6.1 sound - so aside from the fact that neither editions have the original mono track, is one better than the other?

Actually, The Terminator only has PCM 5.1 uncompressed and Dolby Digital 5.1 English tracks. Fox is just distributing the same disc and the same art. The only thing they did to "boost" sales was add to a new slipcover that matches the Fox /MGM BDs.

If you look closely at the cutout for the UPC, you can see a part of the old Sony specification "blade."

I just bought it and I think it looks like crap. I know its not my player (Samsung BDP-1500 w latest firmware) because I also tried it on a PS3. Basically the image looks totally cropped and not anywhere near 1080p It looks more like standard DVD (480p) and I cannot get it to go widescreen. It is full screen and extremely cropped. Anyone else have this movie to verify this?

What do you expect from a movie made in the early 80's that was made on a shoe string budget.

With a new transfer on it way hopefully you will be happy with that...

He was probably referring to what you said. It's not cropped or "extremely cropped" as you say. It's OAR is 1.85:1. On a 16:9 TV, it will fill the entire frame. It's supposed to be that way, because that's how it was intended.

You're not gonna get a 2.35:1 transfer on this, so you come off sounding like you don't know what you're talking about.

It also looks pretty darn good for an older catalog title, so I also disagree with your assessment that it looks like "crap".
