so the Sony $12.99 version has uncompressed 5.1 sound, the Fox edition has Dolby Digital 5.1 and 6.1 sound - so aside from the fact that neither editions have the original mono track, is one better than the other?

Actually, The Terminator only has PCM 5.1 uncompressed and Dolby Digital 5.1 English tracks. Fox is just distributing the same disc and the same art. The only thing they did to "boost" sales was add to a new slipcover that matches the Fox /MGM BDs.

If you look closely at the cutout for the UPC, you can see a part of the old Sony specification "blade."

I just bought it and I think it looks like crap. I know its not my player (Samsung BDP-1500 w latest firmware) because I also tried it on a PS3. Basically the image looks totally cropped and not anywhere near 1080p It looks more like standard DVD (480p) and I cannot get it to go widescreen. It is full screen and extremely cropped. Anyone else have this movie to verify this?

What do you expect from a movie made in the early 80's that was made on a shoe string budget.

With a new transfer on it way hopefully you will be happy with that...

He was probably referring to what you said. It's not cropped or "extremely cropped" as you say. It's OAR is 1.85:1. On a 16:9 TV, it will fill the entire frame. It's supposed to be that way, because that's how it was intended.

You're not gonna get a 2.35:1 transfer on this, so you come off sounding like you don't know what you're talking about.

It also looks pretty darn good for an older catalog title, so I also disagree with your assessment that it looks like "crap".

It's the best the movie ever looked so far, but it definetely doesn't look HD, more like 720p. Encoding in mpeg2 doesn't help, nor it being a single layer, and an old transfert with very hot whites going into clipping in several scenes. It's definetely not up to the minimum transfert standarts, tought it's the best this movie ever looked up until now. The Lowry remaster will make this disc an instant freesbee.
