Default Onkyo TXSR605...but what speaker setup?

I was looking for a reciever for my PS3 and this one seems like the best match the Onkyo TXSR605. But what about a speaker system? I have a low budget and I saw this 7.1 home speaker package on Ebay is it a good buy and match with this reciever?

I'm sure the speakers will sound just fine but if you're like me, the 100watt subwoofer just isn't going to do it.

They look absolutely rubbish to me, my advice would be to spend a similar amount of money on the speakers as on the amp. If you can't afford this with the 605, I'd expect you to get better overall sound quality by buying a cheaper amp and matching it with appropriate speakers rather than having a more expensive amp and really cheap speakers.

If budget is a major issue, I'd spend your current budget entirely on just the front stereo pair first, and get something nicer than if you spread the $$$ out and got a system. Then when your finances allow, build on those fronts w/centers/surrounds that are similar high quality. That's what i've done. Hell, as a stopgap beg steal or borrow other speakers to handle the surround duties 'till you can replace w/nicer, permanent ones.

I agree with the earlier posts. go into a b&m, find some speakers you like (front left and right), then I would go online and find them cheaper. make sure your center channel is by the same company and the same series as the fronts. I like my jbl balboa series fronts and center and am looking to get this same receiver you are. velodyne makes some damn good subs for not that much. my 150W 10'' makes my neighbors complain. got that for $150 at frys.

I got a set of five Onkyo speakers and a woofer from Circuit City for $200. This was a "speaker set in a box", so I got all I needed in one stop. I am pretty sure they were on sale, but it was a great deal and got me up to 5.1.

I recently got the Onkyo 605 that you are speaking of which is 7.1, which needs two more speakers. I went to Circuit City and bought two Pioneer 21s to round out the system. They were $40. I went cheap because there just aren't hardly any 7.1 sources right now. I may upgrade later, but probably not. They are only surround speakers.

So I now have a left front, right front, center, left, and right surround speakers by Onkyo. I have a left and right center surround as well by Pioneer. I have two surround speakers facing front on each side of my couch, then two surround speakers directly behind the couch facing up toward the ceiling. It all works great.

NIN: BYIT BD and NIN:SACD Downward Spiral are the two most impressive forms of media that I've watched/listened to on the PS3 so far. Just amazing. Good luck.

It's possible to get good speakers cheap if you do your homework. My speakers are Onkyo. They had been part of an HTIB with dvd/receiver, five satellites and a small sub. By the time I found them the system had been discontinued and outlets were selling the 5 speakers (no sub) for a little over $100. I found a review of the original system online and it gave good marks for sound quality. At the time I needed small speakers that could be wall mounted and these fit the bill. I use them with an Onkyo receiver and I'm quite pleased with the sound. I've owned audiophile speakers and these certainly aren't, but with a modest receiver and a decent subwoofer they provide a truly enjoyable HT experience.

I don't know about the speaker package you mentioned. As someone else mentioned, the subwoofers in these sets are usually too small and underpowered. You might be better off buying a set of satellite speakers and a separate sub. Don't be discouraged, you can get great sound on a tiny budget. Good luck.

Default Speakers are the most important part of the system.

The quaility of the speakers dictates the quality of the sound. The best amp will sound bad through cheap speakers. Look at M&K, Keff, Klipsh. I have 'cheap' M&K speakers and they are simply the best sounding speakers I have ever had. (Cheep = $2,500 for a THX select certified set of 5+1 speakers 4 years ago)

Maybe let us know what your speaker or home theater budget is and then we can help you find some decent speakers for the amount listed. By the way, the SR605 is a good choice, I bought the SR805. Believe me, you'll want good speakers

I disagree, I used to have a sony amp strde995:

connected to my sony speakers:

The sound was high, but lacked mid-range and depth.

I switched to a pioneer vsx1014tx: This being the infamous De-badged Elite without multi-room:

And instantly noticed improved mid-range bass, highs and all around a more enveloping sound from my "cheap" hometheatre speakers. I initially bought these cheapy sony speakers as a stop gap til I could afford some better speakers, but have been so happy with the system, it resides in my master bedroom and is used almost daily.
I am sure my system would sound even better with great speakersm but there comes a point of diminishing returns

oh, and this is the sub I use:

This thing pounds...ask my neighbors!

Best match this set is not but if your budget is tight and you just want to migrate from TV stereo to full surround, go get these first, if they are cheap and stays below US$140. Later on you can match your receiver with better speakers.

Wow didn't expect this much great feedback thanks guys! But I guess I should have also stated that I already have a Sony HT-DDW700 5.1 HITB and my budget I guess would be $1,000. I am not looking for the greatest sound system ever I have a small room but the system I have now just isn't cutting it. One of my top priorities is to get something that will last. I wouldn't mind piecing together it all but I just don't want to over spend and plus I know jackshit when it comes to speakers and subwoofers.

You can get Paradigm or Athena Technologies speakers for fairly cheap. I have two sets of Athena BP-1's for the stereo and surrounds and a CS-1 for the center. For a subwoofer I have a Yamaha 8" 100 watt subwoofer. I have an older model Onkyo TX-SR500 5.1 reciever and the sound is very good. Try looking up either Paradigm or Athena on EBay. You should be able to find some for a decent price.

I think I am just going to go with the Onkyo 7.1 sks-ht430 speakers. It is in my price range and will be enough for my room. So overall I would just be spending under $700 for the whole setup which is good. I would also save some money if I can find someone to buy my old setup for like $100. Thanks for all of the help guys I really do appreciate your viewpoints and suggestions.

I actually have that system. its sitting in my office now. trying to find someone who wants to buy it. its pretty good for a starter. if you get it go to monoprice.com and get the 12 gauge speakerwire, its noticeably different.

This is a good deal. No sub.

http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-bin/item/KEFAVP305

I have them (actually 2 sets) and they sound very good for the price.

These KEF's are sort of the kissing cousines to the Celestion. Good price with Sub.

http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-.../KEFKHT1005BLK

I'd also look at the NHT SuperOnes, maybe Klipsch (I'm not a fan, but they have a big following).
