I've always suggested going to a store and trying the various brands out in your hands.
I went the Nikon route because it felt better in my hands. I also liked where the controls were better. Other good brands are Sony and Pentax. That being said. many of my friends felt the same way about Canon and went that route. Additionally, if you think HT is expensive, photography is too. |

So I had the T1i for about week to play with it, before returning it back to Canon. The camera was very well build for the Rebel series like the XSI and all Rebels....this DSLR will compete with the Nikon D90 with the Live view, 15MP, and HD video. The T1i great DSLR if you are looking to do a lot of the HD video and with out breaking the bank. Because the next Canon wih HD video is 5D mark II which is around $2500....If you are just looking to do more picture shooting...I would really recommed not buying the T1i and plus if you are not going to print out image 20' x 20'... I would look at XS or XSI and save extra money for better lens then the stock kit lens...I have been shooting for 3 years and still use my lil Canon XT with my Canon 30D...
I totally agree with you Louhamiton...my gears alone is about $8k total! |

$1K?
That budget is like in the middle of no where.. too low for a decent DSLR, and too high for a good point-and-shoot... you either get a top of the line point and shoot, which you probably can with $400, or a basic entry level DSLR, xti, or Nikon D60. if you're not going to change lenses and just for travel/honey moon... get this one. Leica http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...al_Camera.html It has super wide angle lens at 24mm, with extreme wide aperture at f2.0!!!!! which is perfect for low light environment. Even though it does offer up to 3600 ISO, but people dont use that high, as they create too much noise. Any real photographer would tell you to get this one, if you're not getting a DSLR and want a "top of the line point and shoot". this is a very very sharp and fast point-and-shoot, and trust me, you will not regret it. Leica is like the BMW and Canon/Nikon is like the Acura/Lexus.. (ha, ok, well, they serve different purposes, but you get what i meant) a Leica DSLR lens cost between $5K - 10K each for almost every lens. Mind you, my new everyday lens of 17-55 f2.8 is $1060, and my other everyday lense 24-70mm f2.8 L is $1160 for the lens alone. So, consider the Leica an extreme good buy at less than $1K, with 24-60 focal range + f2.0 aperture! You either get that, or just get an entry level DSLR with kit lens (which isnt so good anyway), but good enough for your daily use I guess. Like the poster above said, being an amateur photograph, my gear cost well over $8-10K easily. Last edited by PNF; 05-28-2009 at 03:45 AM. |

![]() i get what you are saying but to convey that message comparison to a rookie isn't fair. leica is well known for their film slr equipment. those 5-10k each lenses you mention are MANUAL focus lenses. seriously what percentage of the world uses that? probably just top portrait photographers or scenic nature photographers. for everyday usage im sure the OP wants an AUTO focus lense that will better suit his or her needs. as for the OP wanting comments on the possible camera purchase. that kit and lense are a good base to start DSLR with. as mentioned a 1k budget is very low if you're planning to use it for different situations. eventually you'll want to get better lenses with different focal ranges and apertures. i would recommend taking your body to a local camera shot and trying lenses out. also they may have a rental program so you can test run it for the weekend before dishing out thousands on a single lense. canon and nikon produce both Lexus and Merc stuff..just look at L glass and 1dIII etc
the 50d does HD video i think?*hdmi out only for viewing, not recording..my mistake* Id agree with the suggestions of getting to the shop and giving it a try, its the best way to get a feel for what you like. www.talkphotography.co.uk if you want more opinions Last edited by mattym; 05-29-2009 at 07:50 PM. You can take great photos without spending $8-10K. I started on an A100 DSLR and yes, now I am over the $10K range, but I still got some definite keepers with the "entry" A100. The T1 is a good camera, but really, as others have said, go to a store and try them. You may find one you can relate to instantly, or one that just feels better in your hands. You will learn faster and get better photos if you enjoy using the camera. DON'T feel like you are stuck with a brand once you buy the first camera. You may want to check out the new Sony A230, A330, and A380. They have a new user interface/menu system that is great for people new to DSLRs, and the new 3 take SD and Memory Stick. Check dpreview.com and popphoto.com for some good camera reviews. Last edited by groovyone; 05-30-2009 at 01:36 AM. |

I'm a canon user and I have quite a few of those glasses that you mentioned + a few others. Maybe the lexus/MB was bad example, but it was just to illustrate that Leica make very good camera body/lens, and I am aware that the OP probably wont be doing much MF, and thus I recommended him one with AF?? Please learn to read. Thank you. Last edited by PNF; 05-30-2009 at 05:17 AM. |

To the OP, or really anyone new to photography, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the book Understanding Exposure. My own copy has been on loan for months to different people. It is an excellent, affordable book to get started and does a fantastic job of explaining the basics and a little beyond. Really a great resource. My friend had her XSi for only a week and was shooting manual thanks to the book.
