Unhappy 1up.com sells to UGO, EGM closes - SHANE IS BACK ON REBEL.FM!!!!!!!!!

wow this is real sad, i've been reading EGM sinse the 90's. im currently still a member, i feel for people at 1up.com to.
Quote:
Following repeated rumors to the effect, Gamasutra has learned that Ziff Davis has sold its 1UP division to Hearst's UGO Entertainment, and is shutting long-running print magazine EGM in the process.

According to a statement received by Gamasutra, Ziff Davis Media has now officially announced the sale of the 1UP Digital Network to Hearst's UGO Entertainment division.

The sale includes 1UP.com, Mycheats.com, Gametab.com, and GameVideos.com, and specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In association with this, Ziff Davis Media's EGM Magazine, a consumer game print mainstay since 1989, will be discontinued. The January 2009 issue will be the final printed issue.

"We believe this is a smart transaction for Ziff Davis Media that places these market leading assets and teams in a great environment poised for further success. The transaction allows us to pay down debt and shift our full focus to our core PCMag Digital Network business. We thank our 1UP team members for their contributions and wish them the best of success into the future", said Ziff Davis Media CEO Jason Young.

"Since we started UGO 11 years ago, we have served the gamer community and built a world-class online publishing platform," said J Moses, CEO of UGO Entertainment. "The acquisition of 1UP, with its authentic voice, tenured editorial personalities and bustling user community, allows us to expand our base of quality content and represents a major step forward in UGO's mission to become the leader in the games space."

[UPDATE: According to information obtained by Gamasutra, around 30 employees of Ziff Davis' Game Group were laid off immediately following today's announcement, including the staff of EGM Magazine, but also some elements of the 1UP Network's web staff, including podcast and video producers.

In addition, Gamasutra has obtained a copy of the internal email sent to Ziff Davis employees by CEO Jason Young following the announcement, as follows:

Paltry, superficial and biased writing. It wasn't always so bad, but in the last couple of years, it's become the magazine form of awful news blogs like Kotaku.

Thats a real bummer, I have been reading since the mid 90's also. I didn't like a lot of the changes in the last year or two, but that's too bad.

That's terrible news. EGM is the only gaming magazine I read any more. I wonder what will happen with my paid subscription....

I need to cancel my subscription to IGN, I've been a paying member since 2000 but rarely use it.

EGM was a horrible magazine. I got a free subscription (the one where they had to keep their numbers up for ad revenue) and I actually cancelled the free subscription...it was horrible

Even though I read EGM regularly, I do agree that it had gone down-hill in the past two years with biased coverage against Nintendo and Sony. Unfortunately in the current economic environment I foresee lots of niche magazines going out of business.

I liked it best about 3 years ago when Dan Shue was the editor-in-chief.

A game magazine that truly sucks is GamePro. Terrible magazine geared towards 8 year olds it seemed.

I've been reading EGM since issue one and have been a subscriber for years. With the magazine scams, hit you up for renewal long before you actually need to renew, I still have years of issues to come as well...In the last year all the magazines I was subscribing too have gone out of business including one that I was transferred to from another magazine that went out of business...I'd call now if you were a subscriber while there is still someone to call...

Obviously not, since they're getting canned left and right.

I do still read some of them, though, namely Popular Science and Wired, which I just subscribed to. I think the niche and scientific magazines will do fine for now, since they offer the reader a smorgasbord of information in one place (as opposed to the user having to click through and read myriad links online).

The better mags will have separate online content too, including some printed articles, but the printed copy will still have easily-accessible, compelling information and articles.

EGM had 1up.

I can't believe I won't get my weekly dose of Shane & Co. tomorrow. What am I going to do without 1up Yours. The best podcast in the world!
