$1K?
That budget is like in the middle of no where.. too low for a decent DSLR, and too high for a good point-and-shoot... you either get a top of the line point and shoot, which you probably can with $400, or a basic entry level DSLR, xti, or Nikon D60. if you're not going to change lenses and just for travel/honey moon... get this one. Leica http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...al_Camera.html It has super wide angle lens at 24mm, with extreme wide aperture at f2.0!!!!! which is perfect for low light environment. Even though it does offer up to 3600 ISO, but people dont use that high, as they create too much noise. Any real photographer would tell you to get this one, if you're not getting a DSLR and want a "top of the line point and shoot". this is a very very sharp and fast point-and-shoot, and trust me, you will not regret it. Leica is like the BMW and Canon/Nikon is like the Acura/Lexus.. (ha, ok, well, they serve different purposes, but you get what i meant) a Leica DSLR lens cost between $5K - 10K each for almost every lens. Mind you, my new everyday lens of 17-55 f2.8 is $1060, and my other everyday lense 24-70mm f2.8 L is $1160 for the lens alone. So, consider the Leica an extreme good buy at less than $1K, with 24-60 focal range + f2.0 aperture! You either get that, or just get an entry level DSLR with kit lens (which isnt so good anyway), but good enough for your daily use I guess. Like the poster above said, being an amateur photograph, my gear cost well over $8-10K easily. Last edited by PNF; 05-28-2009 at 03:45 AM. |

![]() i get what you are saying but to convey that message comparison to a rookie isn't fair. leica is well known for their film slr equipment. those 5-10k each lenses you mention are MANUAL focus lenses. seriously what percentage of the world uses that? probably just top portrait photographers or scenic nature photographers. for everyday usage im sure the OP wants an AUTO focus lense that will better suit his or her needs. as for the OP wanting comments on the possible camera purchase. that kit and lense are a good base to start DSLR with. as mentioned a 1k budget is very low if you're planning to use it for different situations. eventually you'll want to get better lenses with different focal ranges and apertures. i would recommend taking your body to a local camera shot and trying lenses out. also they may have a rental program so you can test run it for the weekend before dishing out thousands on a single lense. You can take great photos without spending $8-10K. I started on an A100 DSLR and yes, now I am over the $10K range, but I still got some definite keepers with the "entry" A100. The T1 is a good camera, but really, as others have said, go to a store and try them. You may find one you can relate to instantly, or one that just feels better in your hands. You will learn faster and get better photos if you enjoy using the camera. DON'T feel like you are stuck with a brand once you buy the first camera. You may want to check out the new Sony A230, A330, and A380. They have a new user interface/menu system that is great for people new to DSLRs, and the new 3 take SD and Memory Stick. Check dpreview.com and popphoto.com for some good camera reviews. Last edited by groovyone; 05-30-2009 at 01:36 AM. |

To the OP, or really anyone new to photography, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the book Understanding Exposure. My own copy has been on loan for months to different people. It is an excellent, affordable book to get started and does a fantastic job of explaining the basics and a little beyond. Really a great resource. My friend had her XSi for only a week and was shooting manual thanks to the book.

Although that camera looks great, I think you will quickly find your limitation with the lens. If you are coming from a point & shoot, an 18-55 lens does not give you a lot of zoom. This is the biggest mistake I see a lot of users make when moving into the DSLR world. I would highly suggest an 18-200mm lens as your first lens. This is what was recommended to me. Then as you get better.more knowledgeable at shooting pictures or want better, faster glass, you can upgrade to a more specialized lens. Good luck! |
