Default Firmware download - incredibly slow?

One of my friends own a PS3, and we are trying to download the newest firmware to get online (it wont let us enter the Playstation Store without it)... The problem is that it wont download even though its hooked up to the internet via cable.. Last time he had to download a firmware update it took around 3 hours, and his internet should not be slow, and isnt on the computers.. I have no idea whats wrong!

Any idea`?

Sometimes it is slower than others.. you could download the update on your PC and move it over to PS3 for install.

Check the actual fireware thread, there should be a link on there.
The same thing happens to me, but if I download from the Ps Site it only takes 10 minutes. Then you just put the file onto a USB. I sure someone has the exact link

This is for the US if you dont have the us ill look around for different regions.

  • A USB cable
  • A PC with Internet access
  • Storage media (Memory Stick™, SD Memory Card, CompactFlash®)* or a USB Mass Storage device such as a USB flash drive
(At least 147 MB of free space required)
    * An appropriate USB adaptor (not included) is required to use storage media with some models.
Update data download procedure

US

http://dus01.ps3.update.playstation....8/PS3UPDAT.PUP

Notice

Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.
Update procedure

Notices
  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system or remove the storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
  • During an update, the power button on the system front and PS button of the controller are inactive.
  1. Insert the storage media or USB device that contains the update data in the PS3™ system.
  2. From the home menu, select (Settings) > (System Update), and then press the button.

  3. Select [Update via Storage Media], and then press the button.

The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.
  4. Start the update data.

Press the button to start the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
  5. Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has been completed, go to (Settings) > (System Settings) > [System Information]. If the [System Software] field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.
Hint

You can delete the update data from the storage media or USB device after the update has been successfully completed.

What rate were you getting.

such as 15 kbps?

Now these are just sample numbers...

150mb*1024=153600kb
5hours = 300 minutes
300 Minutes = 18000 Seconds

Some division later...
About 8.5kb a sec..

I've been getting a solid 1-2 MB (yes BYTES) a second from PSN in the UK in recent weeks.

That's from UK, US and JPN stores too. Patches and System Software downloads were quicker earlier than store downloads.

Yeah...my connection could be faster if I paid more, but I usually don't do a whole lot of downloading to make a difference.

150kbps normal DSL speed?

Broadband services started at 512kbps in the UK with 256kbps for the remote areas with poorer copper lines. I think you'd struggle gaming with 150kbps unless you're playing something highly optimised for low bandwidth like dialup modem games.

Bit of TFC or Counter Strike.

Im assuming that is his download rate not actually connection.
150kb download rate = about 1mb down and 384 up connection.

Usually :P
