Default PS3 - 'Malfunction' I'd like to keep

Hello all,

My PS3 malfunctioned the other day and man, I wish it would stay. Wondering if anybody else has/had this issue.

Basically, when I bought my PS3 I was discovered that I had to select HDMI (hooked into my T.V) or Optical through my receiver (the only way I can get DD/DTS - since my receiver doesn't have an HDMI hookup). Ok fine. But I had to choose one or the other, meaning I either had to use my receiver or my T.V. only.

I called Sony and asked if a future update would fix this. I explained that I didn't like having to go into the menu everytime I wanted to listen to a certain source. Heck, my old DVD player can be connect to two different audio sources and depending on which one I turn on (my T.V. or reciever) I hear sound. They said, "This is a hardware issue and there are no future plans as of this time to change this; however, they do understand my concern". Annoyingly short-sighted, if you ask me. Seems like a basic function.

Now then, the other day, all of a sudden - sound came out of my T.V. I turned on my receiver and sound was working fine from there too! Then, later it went away. It happened again a few weeks later and lasted half the day. I would love if this malfunction could stay. I don't always want a Home Theater experience everytime I play a game, and I don't want to have to go into the sound menu before every game/movie.

Anyone else had this experience or been able to find a work-around. Very curious.

(And as a side-note, the other day my Homecourt NBA played in DTS.) Strange.

Take it easy all,
