'Princess Diaries 3' Is Reportedly In The Works At Disney

The Crown Princess of Genovia may be back again.

According to the Tracking Board, Disney is reportedly moving forward on "Princess Diaries 3." The website reports that the plot for the third movie is being kept under wraps, but that it may or may not involve Anne Hathaway.

When Access Hollywood asked Julie Andrews about the possibility of a third "Princess Diaries" back in 2012, the actress said she'd be open to return. "I would never say no because Disney’s so wonderfully clever and inventive," Andrews said, "but I would think they’ll stay with just the two because of Annie." If Andrews doesn't even think her co-star would return, chances seem slim.

However, there is also the possibility that Disney may plan to reboot the "Princess Diaries" franchise, according to the Tracking Board. As the Dissolve points out, there's a lot of room for possibilities for a whole new era of Mia Thermopolis-like stories since Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries book series has lots of material to borrow from. The 2001 Disney movie was based on Cabot's 2000 novel of the same name, but there are nine other volumes of the young adult series, as well as multiple half volumes. Cabot also just released the first adult installment of her series, The Princess Diaries, Volume XI: Royal Wedding.

Disney and reps for Hathaway and Andrews were not immediately available for comment.

The first was pretty good, but I didn't care for the second too much. It just felt "off" somehow, in terms of pacing, characters, and humor.

I love both of the films, but I don't see a need for a third if Anne Hathaway isn't going to be in it.

I can't see Anne Hathaway or Chris Pine returning for this one. Could end up being a straight-to-video flick with every part recast, or a sequel in name only with brand new characters who hit exactly the same beats as the first movie.

Or they just start all over again and sign all the new actors to multi-picture deals in the hopes that it's a hit.

My guess is that the new character would be a cousin who is somehow needed to fill a royal role.

Princess Diaries 3 Happening with Anne Hathaway and Gary Marshall?

We have a third Bridget Jones movie on the way this year, but did you think Anne Hathaway was going to let Renée Zellweger have all the fun? According to People Magazine, Academy Award-winner Hathaway may be reuniting with director Gary Marshall for The Princess Diaries 3, which looks like it would be set primarily in the Big Apple.

“I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do ‘Princess Diaries 3’ in Manhattan,” Marshall said. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”

This would be Hathaway and Marshall’s first pairing since 2010’s star-studded Valentine’s Day, and may also potentially feature the return of Lord Nicholas Devereaux, as played in the second film by Chris Pine.

“Maybe,” Marshall says of Pine possibly coming back. “He’s quite big now, you know. Chris Pine likes me, you know why? Because his father is in ‘Mother’s Day’!”

Marshall’s Mother’s Day, featuring Robert Pine, will open on April 29. Meanwhile, Hathaway will next be seen in another sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, reprising her role as the White Queen in the May 27 release.

The original The Princess Diaries opened in 2001 and grossed over $165 million worldwide, focusing on an awkward, unpopular high school
girl named Mia Thermopolis who discovers she’s heir to a small European kingdom called Genovia. Julie Andrews co-starred in the film as well as its sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which made over $134 million worldwide in 2004. Both movies were released by Walt Disney Pictures.

Sign me up. The first one is what got me introduced to Hathaway, and I've liked her in nearly everything ever since. The sequel was alright. Wonder where her character would be in her life at this stage, as well as Julie Andrews, if they can get her back. Can't see Chris Pine returning though.

She's a bigger star than him. Plus outside of Star Trek I know he hasn't done much. I know he's in the upcoming WW movie.

But should be interesting. I quite like the first 2 films.

Well, they can't take too much longer, especially if they want Julie Andrews to continue her role as Queen Clarissa. Anne Hathaway's also 40 herself, so they need to get the ball rolling if they want another Princess Diaries film to be believable.

Nevertheless, as the story points out, Hathaway is still hoping Julie could be persuaded:

Hathaway, who has not officially signed for the new film, had expressed interest in being part of a new Princess Diaries movie. Back in October 2022, the Oscar-winning actor told Entertainment Tonight that she was “pulling” for a third movie and added, “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”

I like Hathaway but without Julie Andrews, there's no reason to make this movie. And based on how Disney has treated Julie Andrews and her very firm conviction to cut off ties with the company, I don't see her ever returning no matter how many zeroes would be in her paycheck.
