Default QUESTION! about the 607

if i connect my Onkyo speaker set (all I can afford now) of 7 speakers to the Onkyo 607...

I want to connect a Ps3, 360, wii, and U-verse to My receiver for surround.

for the 607, will putting HDMI in to the receiver from each of these things and then the hdmi to the tv from the receiver be all i need?

that is to say, for the 607, will i only need HDMI, and no additional optical/coaxial like other receivers in addition to the HDMI in order to get the 7.1? thanks!

Yes, with the 607 all audio and video signals can be handled via HDMI.

What's the upscaling on the 607? I know with the 605/606, it was 1080i. I would consider testing going directly to the TV, since doing a jump from 420p -> 1080i -> 1080p is one jump too many in my book.

The 1080i upscaling is only with component video source material. I have 100% HDMI connections with my 606, so I can't really comment on what the 1080i looks like.

EDIT: Oh, I think you're talking specifically about the Wii, right?

Right. Wii is component if you have the right cables for it.

For U-verse, make sure it has the Total Home DVR Phase 2 update, AND you have your digital audio settings (from menu, choose Options > Audio/Language Options, then Digital Audio Output) set to "Surround sound". You can't get 5.1 over HDMI without the Phase 2 update; with the update, you won't get 5.1 at all until you enable it in the menu.

Personally, though my HTIB is capable of handling HDMI audio, I still prefer HDMI to TV/optical to HTIB since HDMI audio takes about a second longer to come up when changing channels. That may be different with your Onkyo, however.
