Go to Settings menu and find the "Backup Utility" (I think it's under "System Settings"). Backup your 60GB HDD onto an external drive, then plug the external drive into your new PS3 and find the "Restore Utility" which is in the same place as the Backup Utility.

Locked files (ie: files that don't have the "Copy" option when you press , like Killzone 2) cannot be restored onto a different PS3 no matter what. That means that there is NO way to get protected files onto your new PS3.
Luckily for me my Killzone 2 save was the only protected data I had. I think they're pretty uncommon.

It's a pretty painless process, or it was for me. Good luck!

Oh ya, and if I were you I'd bring the game update versions on both systems up to the same level before starting. I had some problems with my game saves on the new PS3 because I was trying to load them on old software (LittleBIGPlanet namely).

A follow up question to anyone who's done this procedure recently:

Does the data in your virtual memory cards (PS1/PS2) also get backed-up for restoration? WAY back when I first got my 60GB, I backed-up the data, formatted the HDD, and then restored the data (just to run through the system's features). The only thing that didn't come back was that memory card data. However, I think a subsequent firmware update may have cured that issue. Can anyone confirm?

I never even looked . My new system doesn't have PS2 BC so it didn't really matter to me. I'll check when I get home tonight though.

No I went from 60GB to 160GB models. Everything will work the same though so no worries.

What does it do with files greater than 4GB (eg, playtv recordings)?

What do you mean? I believe my Oblivion install is >4GB and it was restored just fine...although I never checked to make sure.

Hmm, it is just that I can't actually copy large playtv recordings to USB as they are bigger than the fat32 file size limit. So I was wondering how the backup utility treated them. There are a couple I'd like to get off the PS3

Interesting...well I never got any errors and when I looked over my stuff to make sure everything worked I didn't notice anything missing but I'll look again to confirm that Oblivion is there and that it is >4GB. I used a FAT32 HDD for the backup.

Can I just ask why you can't just change the HDD's over?

I've got about 200GB on my 320GB 60GB machine. Why can't I just vacate the one in the slim and put it in the 60GB machine and vice versa?

The PS3 will automatically format any new hard drive you put in (even if it has been previously formatted to the PS3 format). So if you take your drive out of 1 PS3 to put it in another all the data on it will be lost.

But fyi, if you remove a hard drive from your PS3 and put the SAME ONE back into the SAME PS3, it won't format it then. That's the only case where you won't lose your data.

Interesting. So a backup/restore is absolutely necessary.

What a waste of time aye. It would take me ages and I would have to use the same drive that everything is already BACKED up on. Meaning i've got to move the PS3 data to the backup drive which almost everything is on anyway and then move to another PS3.

I suppose I could just delete all the photos/music/video from the PS3 before backing up. This would speed up the process right? Then I can just copy the music/video/photos from the backup drive to the PS3 after the restore.

That's what I did. I took off all the stuff i didn't need anymore and put all my music/videos on my laptop then backed up what was left.

It was actually a pretty good way to clean up my HDD as I had lots of stuff I never used anymore on there.

If you make a back-up file and it has protected content in it like LBP dlc etc, is this back-up file still usable on the new PS3?

Does it give an error that the PS3 slim isnt able to use the backup file?
Or does it problemlessly put all the data on the PS3 slim and ignores the protected content (by not putting it on PS3 slim)?

Or does the new PS3 not accept the back-up file at all (with or without protected content) and I have to manually save all my saves etc to an external hard-drive?

The backup utility appears to zip up files and then split it into a collection of 4GB dat files that can be copied onto a fat32 device.
