You can still get a high school diploma, even through Adult Ed...

I would never hire a person with a GED, because it is the biggest "I cant try" stamp ever. Further 98% of Marines have high school diplomas, and only 2% have GED's because you need a special waiver and/or college credit to make a GED work.

Only people I can imagine having a GED are girls who are preggers with 2 other kids, and drug addicts, though both get a diploma if they have any drive in life.

Oorah Devil Dog.. Your board name may be better than mine...

HomeTheaterVirgin- I'd check with you local community college. I'm not sure about how to obtain a diploma. But I know some places offer GED courses for free.

Teufel Hunden is right, the Marines aren't to hesitant about signing young boots up who don't rate a HS Diploma.

yawn. I got my GED because HS was a waste of my time. Took my ACTs and got good enough scores to go anywhere but Ivy league which is good enough for me. HS diplomas mean diddly squat, Its your ACT/SAT scores that matter.

Edit: HS diploma means squat if you dont plan on trying to attend Harvard, yale, columbia, and the likes.

The point was that if you aren't planning on going to college (which is the only thing ACT/SAT scores matter for), then a GED is a huge red flag to employers. I'd never hire one if there were comparable HS diplomas in the running unless the individual was exceptional and had a REAL good reason for not graduating HS.

HS was a waste of time? No offense, but that's a cop-out. How, exactly, do you think college will be any different?

I get what you are saying if I was a employer and seen two applicants one with a Ged and one with a Diploma.I would definatly lean more towards the person with the diploma.

I was discouraged about going to college because I did poorly on my ACT, so I delayed going to back for a few years. I am now back in school and have about 60 college credit hours and have a 4.0 GPA. Either I have changed or the ACT does not mean as much as it is made out to be. Because of my grades I can attend Bradley University but I plan on getting my bachelors degree from another school and save myself about$40,000 in student loans. I just wish I had not waited to go back. I would already have a Bachelors Degree or even a Masters by now. Good luck to Hometheatervirgin in continuing your education

THAT's the good reason I was referring to.

Good luck in continuing your education. Sounds like you got a good head on your shoulders and you know what you want.

College has been very different, in the sense that it actually gets you somewhere. I wont get into it, but HS WAS a huge waste of my time. Since I was never planning on going Ivy League I didnt need to stay. The only reason why I would (should've) stay in HS is to get scholarships so you dont have to pay for school. Other then that America's current HS system gets a big

Everybody is different, I was just pointing out that its a fallacy to think you NEED a HS diploma.

Agreed, if you attend college nothing prior to that matters except if you had a criminal record. But if all you had was a GED it might throw up some red flags.

I disagree. High school is as much about being a social learning experience as actually going to class and learning stuff. And if you think only Ivy Leagues are the ones who will pass on a GED, you're either misinformed, or got really lucky and are an exception.

Top public schools and probably a majority of private schools will look down on GEDs, unless it was because you were some sort of savant and wanted to finish HS early. These sorts of schools have high SAT requirements to begin with, so not having a HS diploma throws up flags, and puts you behind people with similar SATs and a diploma.

So, yes, you can go to college (and even a good college) without a diploma, but your chance of getting into better-than-good schools is probably somewhere between slim and none.

~~~~
HomeTheaterVirgin, if you want to make up for not finishing high school, maybe you want to skip over HS in general, and sign up for a part-time program at a community college. You could take a couple classes at a time, at night, and that way you could still work and keep making money, but also set yourself up with something to fall back on, in case anything ever happened to your job.
As a side bonus, most community colleges, I think, generally have programs in place to allow you to "finish" high school, as long as you pass your college courses (which still count as college credits as well). You'll end up with a GED or a generic HS diploma (depending on how things work at your local community college and school boards).
And the way around that is to go to CC show them you can put up the gpa/ college skills and boom even then they'd take you.
So like its been stated, there are always around not having basic requirements. Don't look at what incoming freshman are doing to get into school, look at what transfer students are doing. My friend transfered and did NOTHING all HS, but did well at CC, and when we both graduate his degree will be the same as mine.
Alot of college's have programs that'd aid situations such as yours. I have a friend from high school that got pregnant and had to finish her studies at a local community college. This would probably be something you should look into.
