Default Blade Runner Question for Real Fans...

Ok so me and my friend have never seen any of Blade Runner! But we heard how great it is.. and how much batman begins and other movies draw inspiration from it... So my freind got that 5 or 6 disc blu ray edition and my question is which version should we watch as our ultimate first... since i know ridley Scott made a few directors cuts we're confused... Thanks!

I'd go with The Final Cut...it looks great in HD and doesn't have the voice-over which everyone hated...but everyone has their own preference(which is why Ridley included everything including the work print which is neat as well.) It's a shame no other studios take notice and give us box sets like Blade Runner.

At the very least, start off by watching either the Original Theatrical Version or International Theatrical Version first, then move on to the Director's Cut. All three of these versions are on disc 3. Then whenever you feel like it, move on to the Final Cut on disc 1. And I haven't watched the Workprint version of the film on disc 5, but if I were you, I'd probably watch that one last.

Final Cut... then watch the Theatrical Cut if you don't get it... the voiceover may help there. Then watch the Final Cut again.

It's not Star Wars... you have to think!!!

I'd vote for Final Cut as well. Such an amazing set. So many versions and a wealth of extras. Couldn't recommend it more highly!

Watch the Final Cut first....the Theatrical is a fun cut to watch but does NOT represent the intended message of the book or intended vision of the director, and I always believe (if the situation allows) you should see a movie the way the director intended before seeing any other version

I would watch in this order that way you can see how they progress:

1. Work Print
2. Theatrical Cut
3. International Cut
4. Dirctors Cut
5. Final Cut

If you want to appreciate how a studio can change a filmmaker's intentions watch them in this order...

The Final Cut - Fixes continuity, lip-synch, SFX, and ADR issues.
The Director's Cut
The Theatrical Cut
The International Cut

Trust me, you'll have a much better understanding of why the 1982 theatrical cut was so poorly received and how the international cut helped push the film to cult status.

I recommend watching the Workprint version at least once to see a rare side of the filmmaking process.

McGarnigal,

I hope you have the ability to play Dolby TrueHD audio, because the remastered sound, along with the restored video on The Final Cut is amazing, and the film starts off quite majestically.

I would have to go with many others and say watch The Final Cut first, but definitely see them all as time allows. You may be pretty amazed at the evolution of this film, and all the versions bring some sort of uniqueness to the table. But, to be amazed at all, you have to be of the sort who doesn't mind 'thinker' movies, of which Blade Runner, in a way, begs of its viewers. Kirsty put it well - you have to think on this one. It's understandably a very boring movie to a lot of people, but to those who enjoy deeper themes, Blade Runner can really deliver.

The Final Cut is Ridley Scott's perfected vision of this movie, although it is not without open controversy among fans - read up on the movie after you see it the first time. There is plenty of discussion on it on various threads within this site alone.

Enjoy!

Then he should not have released the cut he did in 1982.

See the Theatrical first.....thats how you would have seen it in 1982 and then watch the directors cut. The directors cuts are just that..tinkering jobs to make them better (or so they think)

* See that hack Lucas for futher clarification.

Wow way off! The theatrical cut was job done by Warner Bros. They stepped in, took control over the movie and basically pissed all over it. Blade Runner is one of those movies that you really should see the director's Final Cut first because it is his intended vision of the movie and the one that fives you the big WOW at the end.

I saw both the theatrical cut and director's cut in the theaters. I prefer the theatrical cut for one reason only. I think the voiceover makes the movie. Call me a purist, but this is a noir movie and all noir movies have voiceover. Voiceover can be used to convey critical information and that's exactly what happened in the theatrical cut of Blade Runner.
