Default Question about Blade Runner Audio

Okay so I have a Yamaha RX-V465 with a Toshiba BDX2000 Blu Ray Player and a PS3 Slim. So the audio for Blade Runner says its Dolby Tru HD, but when I play it the audio says just plain old Dolby Digital 5.1 when using my PS3 and my Toshiba players. I tried switching my PS3 to bitstream to make my receiver decode the audio instead and it still says dolby digital 5.1. So I put in Star Trek Blu Ray which is also Dolby Tru HD and my PS3 and Toshiba player both run the audio as Dolby Tru HD and same when i choose to bitstream with my ps3 and have the receiver decode the audio. So was it a mistake on the blu ray case saying Blade Runner was coded with Dolby Tru HD or am I missing something? I also tried the hangover blu ray which is also dolby tru hd and it also decodes to dolby tru hd so I am not really sure what is going on. Also before anyone asks yes I am using HDMI cables for the audio/video so I know thats not the problem. I just received my Receiver and speakers yesterday and hooked it all up so if anyone has any insight to what might or might not be wrong that would be great thanks! I also wanted to add that yes I am using the final cut disc because that is the only version that was supposively coded with dolby tru hd.

perhaps you need to select the true hd track in the movie menu. at first, a lot of discs that were released defaulted to lossy audio instead of lossless.

WB discs default to the Doly Digital track, you have to go to the menu to select the lossless track

I was trying to find it in the menu, but couldn't find any of the audio set up options. All it says is languages, scene selection or special features. Anybody own The Blade Runner 5 Disc Set that gets this movie to run Dolby Tru HD or know where on the disc I can go to change the audio?

was just checking and The Final Cut is the only one with a TrueHD track, the rest versions of the movie are only DD 5.1

Default Dics 1 "Final Cut"

Final cut is the one that has all the latest technology implemented. Picture and audio quality is far better.

Well i feel stupid now, but I figured it out. Normally the audio options are under a setup option on the disc menu, but on this disc it was under languages which is where i discovered english dolby digital 5.1 was selected. Option for Dolby Tru HD was right below it. Problem solved. Thanks to everyone who responded to my post.

Default True HD Sound Track Missing on BR Collector's Edition

Thank you. I'm not crazy after all...

There is NO Dolby True-HD sound track on my Blu-ray copy which I bought this past January from Amazon even though all included documentation says there is. I have 2 blu-ray players--an LG BH200 and an OPPO BDP-83. Neither player picks up a True-HD sound track...it's not even listed in the the setup menu!! Trust me...the ONLY sound track on the disc is DD 5.1!!!

Dolby True-HD IS, however, included on the HD-DVD version of the same box set which I bought back in 2007 when HD-DVD and Blu-ray were battling it out so this appears to me to be a production omission.

Read this thread, you may have gotten two "work print" discs (two of disc 5) instead of just one like you're supposed to.

You can get a replacement, just search in the thread, good luck!

I can vouch that both the HD DVD and BD versions of BD require you to manually change the audio track from DD to DD TrueHD. It's exactly the same process with the Matrix films on both BD and HD DVD.

True.On mine it's the second soundtrack-which I find strange. Why not put it to the first available track since that's what the player is using as default? Is it because some players/setup don't work with DD trueHD?

Probably because the DD track can't be taken from a TrueHD stream. You have to have two separate tracks, one for DD and one for DD TrueHD. This is why most of the studios have gone to strictly using DTS-HD Master Audio. The regular DTS track can be pulled from the Master Audio track so that's more space on each disc that can be used for audio tracks in other languages.

OK...after I read the last two replies, I went and checked it out. This is what I found for both formats as it applies to both players for the Blu-ray version and the HD-DVD on the LG...

Blu-ray:

Movie starts with no menu and defaults to DD 5.1.

Top/Disc Menu button brings up the following:

Behind the Story:
check box for a single commentary
"All our Variant Futures" short feature

That's it--nothing else

Pressing Pop-up menu button brings up the following

Languages: English (no other languages listed)
Scene Selection
Special Features: Chk box for only 1 commentary/"All Our Variant Futures" short subject

If I press the "Audio" button on either machine to select a different sound track, I get 1, count 'em, 1 language to choose from!! That being "English MultiChannel". These selections are both picked up on my Onkyo TX SR606 as Dolby 5.1 via HDMI.

HD-DVD:

Movie starts with no menu and defaults to TrueHD

Disc Menu and Pop-up Menu both have the same menu selections as listed below:

Pause --- Settings --- Scene Sel --- Special Features

Languages

English
English TrueHD
Francais

I can't imagine that a top-rated blu-ray player (the OPPO) is misreading the disc. It has to be a production error on my copy. Oh, well, I'll just play my HD-DVD version to get all the goodies...but I DID want to retire that LG so my wife would have, as she puts it, one less "ugly" box to clutter up her armoire

What you've got is a mislabeled disc: "All Our Variant Futures" is a feature on the disc 5/work print version of the film. Warner has a replacement program for those similarly afflicted; perhaps someone who's been through the process will follow up with details?

Edit: Referenced by Q earlier in this thread. Blade Runner 5th disc replacement info.

With Dolby TrueHD, it can pretty much work the same way. The only difference is that the lossy track isn't integrated back into the lossless track. But if you select Dolby TrueHD while only having Dolby Digital capabilities, it'll automatically play the Dolby Digital track. Which is why Paramount, WB, Sony... they all just have the "English" language option now (instead of having 2 English options).

Many, many thanks to Joe Cain for turning me on to this error. I found the following review in Amazon concerning disc 5 labeled as disc 1 error....

"How to get the correct disc for your Blu-Ray set, January 21, 2009
By Robert D. Walstrom

This review is from: Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I bought this set from Amazon on January 1, 2009. Like other reviewers I too received a duplicate disc, the "work print" content on both discs 1 and 5.

Just contact the Warner service hotline at: 1-800-553-6937. The operator I talked to was very helpful and fully aware of the problem. She took down my information to send me the correct disc 1 when they become available. She said currently they are waiting on more to be printed and it will take at least 3-4 weeks before they are available.

*FYI, I rated this item one star to get the attention of folks who are having the same problem.

2/10/09 UPDATE: I have now received my replacement disc 1 with the correct content so my set is now complete. I'd highly recommend you contact the number above if your set came with the defective disc."

I called the above phone number, gave the operator my name and address and he said that I would receive my replacement disc within a week or so. I hope this helps anyone else with the problem.
