Default Why can't we download during movies?

Title basically says it. I totally understand that we wouldn't want "so and so is online" coming up every 5 secs during your favorite movie or tv show.

But that begs the question why can't we turn that off anyway. Seeing people log on and off during games is sometimes distracting to begin with.

But anyway why can't we be logged on during a movie but we can when playing a game? It would be so much more efficent for those of us with lower dsl speeds to be able to download a big file like FF7 from the store while watching House season 5 dvds.

Think it will eventually be a patch? or has it already been mentioned? I try and follow all the PS3 news but sometimes forget things.

Thoughts?

I agree. I think about this a lot. I start up a demo download and then throw in a flick and the download stops. My guess is because the hardware is being used and it could affect playback. However (don't lynch me) the 360 is capable of downloading while watching a movie either by it's own drive or the HD-DVD external.

As to your other point, I agree it'd be nice to just toggle off reminders- again, the 360 will toggle those off during playback if you select it. Having downloading on and reminders off would be really nice.

Just so you know you CAN turn off announcements like the so and so signing on and off in the settings menu

Yeah I think Sony just needs to give us a choice on what we want. I disabled friend notifications on my xbox 360 when I am watching a movie but allow them during games. I would love to have that option.

I really hope that background downloading during movies becomes a reality soon. I would use that a lot.

I wonder the same thing...particularly when you can play any Blu-ray game and background downloads work just fine.

I'm guessing it has something to do with BD-Live, but I still think they could make it work. It's not a huge deal for me because I can just download while I'm playing a game instead, it would be a nice thing to have.

Even still, I'm pretty sure you cannot download in the background when watching a SD DVD...?

I think you're right.

I just assumed that, not wanting people to think poorly of BD-Live's already poky transfer speeds, PSN connectivity is disabled during movie playback so bandwidth isn't tied up with downloads.

I forget exactly where... either under Display Settings or System Settings. Look for something like "Display Notifications" and it'll just be an On/Off setting.

If I remember correctly, you do not have to remain signed-in to the PSN after the download starts. As long as your internet connection is still live then it continues to download.

I was unaware that the background downloading would work while playing a PS3 disc-based game? I did notice the downloads pause while watching movies and I'm pretty sure they also pause when you start up a downloaded game like PAIN. It makes sense that downloads would pause during gameplay but movies do not require as much computing power as games so hopefully Sony will figure something out.

(And yes, I'm one of those annoying smartypants who'll point out "Uh, that's not what 'begging the question' means", but we'll gloss over that for now...)

Think it's possible to download while watching SD, but BD tries to keep the lines clear for all BD-Live functions, just in case.
The same is true for Desktop games (or PS2 games if you're one of us 60G folks) vs. PS3 games.

(And yes, how many other people forgot they were on the Games forum, and first thought he was referring to downloading movies on a mobile device while in the theater?)

I've not tried watching a movie while downloading. I would download during disc games but not while doing multiplayer. Not sure why but the past few months i can't download while playing a game. They just stop. I've not changed any settings and my connection is fast. You don't need to be signed in to download once you've started it. I remember i could have 2 downloads going at the same time when PS3 first came out. Now they just go pending. I don't know if a certain update prevents that. This was back in 06 and 07. Wish i could dual download.

When watching movies off the hard drive it does not pause the download,
when playing offline games it does not pause..

When watching dvds or blues it pauses..

Which means...

It disconnects you from the interweb when you are watching a Blu/DVD. I don't know why...

In fact, since it shows your friends what you are playing on your profile, I think it showing that you are watching a movie (even better if it shows WHICH movie) would be awesome! "Hey wait, he's watching 'The Notebook'! I will give him hell later!"

You can't access in-game XMB either when playing a DVD, Blu-ray, or PS1/2 game either. Obviously it has something to do with the firmware. Maybe a different OS is used for PS2 games and Blu-rays? Who really knows? The real answer to this question is "Nobody knows; Ask SCEA".
