(Check out the link for pics and links)
http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-974...?tag=cnetfd.mt Pie charts indicate Blu-ray victory over HD DVD assured If a picture's worth a thousand words, a pie chart has to be worth at least 500. Well, Ken Pierce over at Pixel Perfect Productions has cooked up five pie charts' worth of data on why the HD DVD/Blu-ray war is over--and as James Carville would say, it's all about the content, stupid. To give credit where credit is due, I first noticed this link in Bill Hunt's "My Two Cents" column on Digital Bits. (Sorry, the item was from a couple of days ago, but I've been on vacation). Says Hunt: "Ken's looked at the biggest films of the last few years and calculated the percentages of those films, by studio grosses, that are available for release on each format. It's called By The Numbers, and you'll find it in Ken's Random Thoughts blog over at the Pixel Perfect Web site." Pierce goes through the top grossing films of 2005, 2006, 2007 (so far), as well as the top 100 grossing films of all time. For 2007, for example, he says, "Of the top 100 2007 (YTD) films, 47 are from Blu-ray exclusive studios, 14 are HD DVD exclusive studios, 29 are dual-format studios and 10 are not supporting either format currently." The rest of the pies look pretty similar. I don't care who wins, but those charts have to be pretty scary-looking if you're an HD DVD supporter. |

Looks good.
I predict the format war will be over after the Spideys come out on Blu-ray. |

I was so happy to see graphs like this when it was first on Pixel Perfect. Getting on cnet.com gives it to a wider audience, and the fact that it's linked on cnet's homepage is very encouraging. The chart posted there, for 2007 YTD theatre releases, shows that HD DVD just doesn't have a chance. They can't compete w/ a 5:1 disadvantage in exclusive titles for new movies.

I love how he describes that its all over except for the whining and crying, then you read a lot of the posts below the article and you see all that *****ing and moaning. ''hd dvd is winning in player and disc sales, and that's all that matters''. I don't know what that fanboi was smoking. maybe I went into a coma, but I thought that blu ray was obliterating them. was he talking about amongst toshiba and m$ employees? cuz then I think hd dvd would have a lead in that demographic.

These things have a way of steamrolling, because people WANT the war to end. So, all they are looking for is a good argument for why it should be coming to an end.
It then becomes a fait accompli, because all the talk that says "it's over" makes more and more people think "it's over" and that leads to it quickly being over. The Blockbuster announcement probably will be seen as the tipping point. Despite it actually being a weak endorsement, it was pushed by the press as Blockbuster making a grand choice of the winner. "It's the content stupid" has been what many of us have said all along. And many of us have been talking about the discrepency in new and recent release capability for years. If it were Warner instead of Universal that had been the main exclusive studio, things would be very different. Perhaps, ultimately, Warner deciding to be neutral was the sign that all this was inevitable. Gary |

Excellent points, Warner would have been a huge loss to Bluray if it had gone HD-DVD exclusive...
Its a good thing that Warner is greedy and just wants as much of the HD market as it can get its hands on, so it decided to support both. |

As a side note: if Warner did go Blu-exclusive, they'd be less tempted to use the same crappy (i.e., reduced bitrate) encoding for Blu-ray and HD DVD. |

So, I have to wonder - do the HDDuD fanboys sit at home and vomit incredulity at the daily news? (Wayne's World dream sequence effect here...)
"Oh for Pete's sake! All those reporters must be getting kickbacks from the Taliban for them to report that we're losing the war over there! Typical! Well my news source is Dubya, and if he tells me everything is ok, then by gum - it is! And look at that Rachel Ray show! Another den of lopsided reporting! So just because she tells us that a combination of lettuce, tomatoes, croutons, and bean sprouts is delicious - we're literally just supposed to swallow that nonsense? Have you ever noticed who sponsors her show? SALAD DRESSING COMPANIES - THAT'S WHO!! If all that weren't bad enough, now my wife wants a food processor! She's been told that a food processor can slice, grate, chop, puree, whip, grind, frappe, blend, and even juice! Why in the world would you want something that can do all that? It's those short-sighted Quisinart Fanboys that are bribing and conniving and lying to all the media to cover up the truth that a stand-alone Chopper, stand-alone frappe-er, stand-alone grinder, stand-alone whipper - and everything else - is SOOOOO much better and more convenient than something that can do about 10 different things! Well, all you have to do is look at the sales of stand-alone puree machines to know that this war will be over soon - and it will be a victory for all intelligent Frappe-ers everywhere. So lie if you want! Who needs all that extra kitchen counter space anyways. None of my friends have even come close to using every square inch of their kitchen capacity - but I do - AND I'M PROUD OF IT!!!" (end dream sequence) Can I get an "Amen"???
