Default With Blu-Ray’s victory over HD-DVD, PS3’s success will snowball past 360

Great article. I think more people are seeing that SONY was smart to include a blu-ray player in every PS3. Wow how things have changed since last year at this time.

With Blu-Ray’s victory over HD-DVD, PS3’s success will snowball past 360
Think that Blu-Ray’s whomping victory over HD-DVD doesn’t have dire implications for the battle between the PS3 and the 360, you’d better think again. Though the PS3 has been behind the 360 in the U.S. for quite some time, that is all about to change drastically in Sony’s favor.

Expect to see a huge shift in the video game industry following the power shift in the video media realm; here’s what you can expect:

1. Expect developers who are looking to release exclusive titles to begin shifting to the PS3’s format; Sony will more than make it worth their whiles, and with HD-DVD dead, the PS3 will be a standard commodity in more homes than the 360 or the Wii in this high-definition generation.

With those developers shifting to PS3 soon, Sony will hold more wildcard developers going into the next console generation; Microsoft will have to work even harder to secure strong exclusive titles. Just as cross-platform hot titles like Call of Duty 4 are pulling users to the Blu-Ray equipped appeal of the PS3, more and more users will switch because developers are going to cater to Sony’s whims.

2. Obviously, expect more movies to Blu-Ray, and therefore more PS3 sales. I’ve believe all along that if Blu-Ray pulled out a victory, then PS3 would see a huge increase in sales.

3. That follows into my next point, which is that 360’s are going to be hitting the GameStops as trade-ins; if you’re dying for a 360, wait a bit. Prices will have to drop if Microsoft wants to be competitive; on top of that, quality will have to improve in 360 consoles. Halo 3 isn’t enough to justify buying a poor quality gaming machine anymore.

4. Just like Vista, due to poor 360 quality, expect Microsoft to start directing the public’s attention at its next console; there’s very little chance they can save the 360’s image, and Blu-Ray equipped PS3’s are just too much competition.

What NOT to expect:

1. Don’t expect Blu-Ray disc prices to drop. No competitor means monopoly on the market; Unless the media giants are feeling benevolent (and when have they ever acted in such a way), you’re still going to spend a pretty penny on a Blu-Ray disc. All those discounts to encourage adoption will probably dissipate.

Finally, don’t expect the controversy over console supremacy to end; just because the PS3 is going to take the cake doesn’t mean Microsoft doesn’t have tricks left up its sleeve (or a new console in the works, which is more likely).

Great article. People are realizing that the PS3 isn't a "failure system". I also liked this article quite a bit:

"Ever since Sony released the PS3, the company was blasted for including features that “no one” wanted. The Blu-Ray drive just appeared to make the device all the more expensive, HDMI outputs and WiFi added to the cost of the unit as well. A little over a year later, it appears as though the company knew exactly what it was doing."

Im a ps3 fanboy..for the most part and I dont really believe that article. It sounds like wishful thinking more than anything related to future pratical events.

Blu ray plaers are also going to be coming down in price. By the time they are more mainstream, they will be cheaper than the ps3.

movies will still be cheaper. They want people to make the switch from dvd to blu ray. having movies at $30 is not going to do that.

They only thing that I can see slowing down the PS3 sales is if the BDA allows Microcrap to make a blu-ray add on to the 360.

Barring that you will see the PS3 now start to eat away at 360's lead.

As to no competition? Are you kidding me hd dvd was really never a threat. Converting the mass from dvd to blu-ray will come but not in 2008 maybe late 2009 will see a battle starting to overtake dvd.

What will help a lot is the confusing that's going on right now about TV's signals switching to digital. Your going to see many replace they're old sets because they think they will not work. Cris tells me all the time people ask him are hdtv's going to work after they change the signal next year? Yes J6P is that misinformed.

I would definitely love to see the PS3 overtake the box. I think that people will no longer see including the blu-ray drive as a waste now that it is apparent the Blu has won the HDM war. I believe the upcoming big name titles will allow the console to make a strong push in the upcoming year.

Well monopolies can choose to control price or quantity, but not both. If the media giants want to control quantity then they'll lower prices

i think the ps3 will snowball past 360, just like the ps2 passed xbox. Its all a matter of time, I still think ps2 is outselling everything still.

I don't think the 360 is going anywhere though. Just because Blu beat our HD-DUD doesn't mean the PS3 will take over the industry. Xbox 360 uses regular dvds for their gaming titles probably microsofts next console will have blu-ray games. They had talked about how their system was better for consumers because of the price and how having and HD-DUD drive helped them in the format war. If the format would have failed Microsoft stated that they could incorporate a blu-ray drive and black labeled sony as idiots for having blu-ray built in. (If you ask me they were lying to the consumers about releasing a blu-ray drive on 360. I don't think they are going to be doing that anytime soon) Besides they are too busy with xbox live and getting studios to enter the digital downloads to even care.
