I hope this is an acceptable thread, since it's not actually about Blu-Ray. I just bought an LG DVD HDMI FullHD up-scaling player (model no. dv4m2h) and while it does a very good job at up-scaling video, it doesn't allow me to watch DVDs that are in a 4:3 ratio without strectching the video. I'd love to know if anyone knows a way I could watch my DVDs upscaled in the ratio they were created for...
Thanks in advance! |

there has to be a setting about pan&scan that is stretching that for you. Dig around in the picture settings and then compare your results. You'll find it. Also look for one that talks about your display being 16:9, and you probably want that to be "off" as well.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Thing is, I've been playing with the settings, and while I do get the regular 4:3 ratio while playing in 480p definition, when i change it to 720p, 1080i or 1080p, it still stretches the image, which kinda makes me assume it can't be helped... Still, no harm in asking, huh? Now, this doesn't happen with my PS3, which upscales automatically and just leaves the image the way it was supposed to be, but that one only plays Region 4, NTSC DVDs, which is why I bought this DVD which plays PAL, NTSC and every region, given that over the years I imported many a film, show and TV series that were never published in region 4 territory. Again, thanks a lot. |

Is it one disc or all discs? I had one disc that would not show correctly on my display. I was told that it was not authored with the correct aspect ratio bit selected. This was with an older Oppo upscaling DVD player. Just a thought.
![]() Another thought. You mention that your PS3 doesn't stretch the picture but this LG does. Are they connected to the same input on the TV? You may have to change the Auto Aspect setting on the TV. Last edited by Hammie; 10-12-2009 at 02:32 AM. |

Thanks a lot for your input, Lou... I tried what you suggested, but it seems nothing can get the trick done. I even tried it with different 4:3 ratio discs, does the same with every one.
Thanks a bunch for your help, guys! I still hope someone that has an LG with the same firmware or something could get rid of this issue and might help. I even read the whole damn instruction manual. Didn't help. |

I have a couple movies that when I play them on the PS3, they don't completely stretch to the outer edges at all, not even top and bottom, and I've never really understood why. It is displayed in a 16:9 format, just how it should be, but it just floats inside the outer edges of my display, if that makes sense.

I think that would be because it's encoded in "fake" widescreen, meaning they just place the black bars at the top and bottom of a 4:3 sized screen. I have a few of those too, but that's the way those DVDs are authored. Luckily I can pull those to the proper size with the Wide button on my Bravia... but only on the PS3. They get stretched in the ugliest of fashions on the new upscaling LG...
