Default Sammy HLT5076s DLP or Sony KDS50a2020 SXRD?

Ok, so recently my samsung DLP model HLS5087 developed this white blob in the middle of the screen, only apparent on an all black screen. I had a couple techs out to look at it, they either couldn't or wouldn't diagnose it so I called BB customer care and got a return authorization.

So I figured, I would just go with the new model, HLT5076s. It's a great looking set. With an awesome picture and the blob is gone & the geometry is alot better than my HLS, but it still does have a slight bow inward at the bottom. and the right side of the screen kinda smiles it bows upward.
It is hardly noticable unless you have a graph on screen on the menubar.

So here is my dilema.
I like the KDS50a2020 it seems to have solid reviews all the way around, but I would be giving up a few things in the process of exchanging.

Pros of the Samsung HLT5076s DLP:

1) The samsung is about $50 cheaper at the cost I am getting.

2) 3 HDMI rather than 2 (but I already have a switcher and am using that anyways)

3) 120hz set vs. 60hz on the Sony.

4) the Samsung has better blacks.

5) I think the samsung set looks better (cabinet design) Slimmer

6) I like samsungs menu system, seems more high tech.

7) 1080p over component, & VGA (i dont use them now, but I may someday)

Now here are the reasons I like the Sony KDS50a2020:

1) Better build quality, Cabinet is sturdier

2)Virtually no geometry issues.

3) A close picture quality to the samsung (as close as I have seen)

4)Brand I trust for longevity.

5) Able to skip inputs

6) Better De-interlacing (almost indistinguishable to native 1080p)

7) 2.5ms response time vs, 16ms on samsung.

8) No colorwheel=no moving parts...potential longevity.

So vote, tell me what you think. Right now I am leaning toward keeping the DLP.
But I want to see what you guys think...

Thanks!

Hello there, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but i have the Samsung HL-T 5676s, and these TV's have HDMI 1.1, not 1.3

The only Samsung DLPs that currently have 1.3 are the HL-T5089s (the LED sets)

I was pissed too

so I assume the 2.5 is better (pardon my ignorance on this)

also, I noticed it always says 1920x1080 60hz when i hit info, even if it's on ps3 outputting 24p

smaller the number the faster. High respons times eliminate motion blur & are better for gaming. A fast LCD is 4ms & average is 8ms.

I own that Sony 50" SXRD and love it. It has been terrific thus far. I would highly recommend it.

I understand there are other TV's out there with similar PQ, but I have 3 small kids and the fact that you can throw a baseball (or a Barbi car) at a rear-pro and not break it was my deciding factor.

However, in your post, you mention input skipping. How do you DO that? I didn't see anything in the manual about it. The only inputs I have things plugged in to are 4 (TiVo) and 6 (HDMI receiver)... and it's a pain to go through 8 inputs when selecting a new source.

so far it's getting closer to an exchange, the HDMI 1.3 isn't there so thats an equalizer, and the refresh rate & geometry...hmm, looks like there are limited advantages if any to the samsung. Could be returning today. waiting on a little more insight.

OK am having the SXRD delivered tomorrow and the Samsung picked up same time.

Wish me luck!

Hopefully I get no green glob, my de-interlacing whoas are over and I can view 4:3 in something other than the cinemascope fashion

I'll let ya know how it goes!

Thanks for the tips on the input skipping! I'll have to try that.

Congrats on the SXRD! I'm loving it more and more each day, and especially since I bought a Blu player.

Btw--I found out today that you should only clean the screen with warm, soapy water, followed up with a soft dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners. Even IF your toddler decides to brush the teeth of Bob the Builder with her toothbrush she just used.

My Sony came this morning and setup went fairly smooth. i plugged everything in, it fit my stand beautifully (looks made for it) some cheapie Init stand from best buy for 36" tube tv's .
I was immediately amazed how good the picture was. All i did was put it on standard and turn noise reduction off. I don't feel like I need to touch anything else, it just looks Fabulous.

Blacks are very good. Maybe not as Inky as the Sammy DLP. but then this TV isn't crushing blacks like the DLP's do without adjusting to a level where the Blacks match the Sony. Geometry is Spot on PERFECTION!!!! after 2 dlp's that had worse geometry of any set I've own, this was a sigh of relief to see all my menu's back straight and uniform. I put in my HDDVD disc that gave me fits on DLP, Big Lebowski. The scene where he is listening to the Walkman laying on the floor. Before the de-interlacing caused this odd flickering and the pattern on the Walkman logo would shimmer and was totally distracting, also a scene of "Jesus'" hair net before would flicker. None of this occurred on the Sony. I had this problem on Both my previous DLP's (HLS & HLT) on interlaced sources.

My only complaint, was something i already fixed. Out of the box there was a soft dark size spot about the size of a pea. I tryed cleaning it with my monster screen cleaner on the outside, but no luck. I didn't want to have to go through all the hassles of return/exchange/calling for service etc. So i figured i would inspect to see if it's something I could take care of. I thumbed through the manual but there was no indication of an access panel for cleaning behind the screen/lens etc. So i looked over the Chassis and saw all the screws to take the face off. I took out all the screws but couldn't get the front completely off. I did get off enough where i could peak inside and so i rigged up a make-shift giant Q-tip out of a tool in my tool box i use when i drop a bolt down an engine bay. I wrapped tissue paper all around it and taped it on. I then rubbed the area on the screen. Nothing happened. Then I brushed over the lens, nothing still there. So i looked up and saw the mirror where the picture reflects and saw this large yellowish piece of what looked like thread. I brushed by it with the make-shift Q-tip and Voila...the spot was gone!

I put all the screws back in, cleaned the cabinet up and pushed it back into place. I can't stop watching it! man I have stuff to do today!.....oh well, I'm enjoying my new set!

W00T!!!!!! 4tw! SXRD R0X Ur S0X!!!

Aren't the DLPs still half assed 1080p sets using wobulation? The SXRD gives you true 1080 pixels.
