why do my ps2 games look a lot better with ps2 upscaling even though im only using a sdtv. before the upscaling they looked really bad now they look like how a ps2 would play them. i expected them to look better on hdtv, but why sdtv too?

With more memory and graphics power, the surface textures are better displayed and edges appear finer. Just like when you play a PS game in a PS2, the surfaces of things don't get all pixelated as you get closer to things. There is also less "fill in jump", so you usually don't have a tree pop out in front of you, because the PS3 has much greater display capability.
Just for the record, blu-Ray movies look better on a SD TV over a DVD too. So if you can't affort a HD TV yet, that's no excuse to not get a HD player/PS3, because you WILL see a difference, even on SD tube TV. |
