Default Oppo 83 Question!

I'm watching 9 with my grandmother and the spainsh subtitles are half cut off on the bottom on the screen, tried messing with the zoom and the only thing I can get is when I underscan the screen which I really don't wanna do. Any solutions? I would appreciate the help guys.

Check out the video format. " Auto, 4:3, or 16:9"

well I'm no expert and this may get a bit confusing but I'm assuming that whatever display you are watching is set to the proper position, such as full etc., so the image is in the proper aspect ratio. If this is true, check what firmware is on your OPPO. It should be BDP83-48-1224. This is the latest and one upgrade included in it is that it gives you more control on how to move the subtitles where you want them. you need to install this since it is the latest and if you do be sure to do a factory reset of the unit (OPPO has said this needs to be done to make sure all the upgrades are set properly). After you install (if needed) and do the reset, you need to check under display options in the setup menu and see what number the subtitle setting is on, since, for some reason, the unit sets itself to -5 after the factory reset. If you have already done this firmware update, then just go ahead and check the subtitle setting to see if it is indeed on -5 . This could be why you are only seeing half the subtitles. Try moving it to zero and see if that helps. Again sorry if this is a bit confusing. Just in case here is a link to the latest guide for a complete settings checklist for the BDP-83:
http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-8..._Checklist.pdf
here is a link to the BDP-83 FAQ:
http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-83-faq.html
and a link to the latest firmware:

There is a Beta firmware update available. One of the features it adds is "Subtitle Shift".
See it here: http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-b...-48-1224b.aspx

Look at #2 :
2. Subtitle shift feature. During playback, press and hold the "SUBTITLE" button to activate the function and then use up/down arrow buttons to move the subtitle. The shift position is saved in the "Video Setup" - "Display Options" section of the setup menu. This feature is useful for customers with 2.35:1 projection screens.

Also, make sure the TV is set to the correct aspect and not zoomed in any.

Watching the exact same movie, I experienced almost the exact same problem but with English subtitles. Connect the OPPO BDP-83 up to a wired or wireless network and then download the latest December 24th firmware (Or use a USB flash memory or CD-RW if you have no network). Once you download the firmware then move the subtitle shift from -5 to 0 and then the problem will be corrected. This will work, it worked for me.

You can actually "tune" where you want the sub-title that you want it to be by pressing and holding the subtitle button on the remote until you see a message on the screen. Then you follow the instruction (using up or down arrow key) to change the location of the subtile to the place you feel most comfortable with. Of course, you need to upgrade the firmware to the most recent one: 1224 or 1224B.

They still ahve the beta firmware available for download, but the latest official firmware is more recent than that beta and includes all the same features.

Ok, I see it's official now. But, see yourself, the release date on both is the same........January 5, 2010. According to that, one isn't more recent than the other. I just wish they'd get their stuff straight...........
They have a great product, but whoever does their internet stuff is kinda slack. Since we have to rely on the info at their site, they need to keep it more up to date.

hey emo, if your machine is set to do the updates automatically, as soon as the newest release comes out, when you turn on your machine it will let you know right away that there is a new update. this of course means the machine is connected to the internet. then you won't have to worry about person who is or isn't updating the website. of course, that won't help out the folks who don't have their machines connected to the web.

Mine's not connected. Internet line is too far away. I'm really not that worried about it. I won't bother with firmware updates until I start having trouble playing discs. Nothing in the new update that applies to me anyway. I couldn't care less about the subtitle shift, since I won't watch a subtitled movie anymore. I hate to read a movie! I can't enjoy it then. I watched Pan's Labyrinth, and hated almost every minute of it. Same thing with Apocalypto.

With Oppo's site, I'm more worried about passing on wrong or old information. When I'm trying to help somebody, and pass along wrong or old info, it makes me look stupid. I think the Beta page should have been gone within five minutes of making it an official release. But, I guess that's just me..........

There is a method here, though. OPPO has a history of offering "beta" firmware for their players. This is firmware that they have evaluated enough to know it doesn't really screw things up, but that they aren't yet ready to make the official production firmware that gets loaded onto new players. It gives people an opportunity to get quicker access to assorted bug fixes and new features. If you look at their other players, they've always listed latest official firmware and latest beta firmware.

Now we come to the BDP-83, which is the first player they've offered that can be updated directly over the network. The problem is that they don't want to push beta firmware to customers who might not want it. The solution is to have the beta and production firmwares maintained separately. If you have production firmware installed and "firmware notification" turned on, it won't tell you about a beta firmware update. Conversely, if you have beta firmware installed, it won't tell you about production firmware. People running beta firmware complained about that. OPPO listened, and what they are just now starting to do is have two separate firmware lines: production and beta, with the beta getting a "B" version of any production firmware that arrives. That way, someone who is installing firmware updates via the network and wants the betas as they appear can stay current even with the latest firmware version is actually production firmware.

But the production firmware and beta firmware are now the same. So, there's no need for the beta firmware page any longer. It should have been removed within five minutes, after it was officially released as the production firmware.

But there are people who want the "beta" version of the production firmware because it resolves a complaint they had and would complain if it were removed. Result: either action (leaving it up or removing it) will appear wrong to some people.

I'll pose a question and would like to hear any answers that folks might have, as they could be useful to OPPO. How best should they structure their support page to provide both the beta and production firmware lines without causing confusion?

Production firmware version: xxx-xx-xxx

- blah blah blah
- blah blah

Beta firmware version: None at this time. Last beta release is now the current production release. Please check back often. Thanks, Oppo Customer Support
