Just wondering. Parts of Ghost Busters seemed so grainy, the DVD had to look better. The sound was not that great either so again was the upconverted DVD better?

I don't know of any BD that is actually WORSE than the DVD.
Sometimes, if you have your TV settings on Dynamic/DNR=on/Dnie=on/cool2, etc etc, this will take the PQ from poor to HORRIBLE. Example: Howards End: with the wrong settings, you get flashing pixelation, which just looks horrible, but that is the TV settings, not the transfer. Make sure your TV settings are on Movie/DNR=off/DNie=off/warm2. |

I found the opening Ghost scene in the library almost unwatchable the grain in that scene looked like static. Did get better later but I was very disappointed.
I am serious about this thread. If your not interested then don't answer. Again just asking |

![]() I bought the Ghostbusters BD on release day and even wrote a small user review on this site's listing for it. Find it, and you'll see that I agree with the lower quality of the movie, but it is a step up from the DVDs. I'm not sure there are any BDs which are lower in quality over their DVD counterparts. Even lossy audio on BDs will at least match DVD, and most of the time improve on it. |

Personally I say no, but I haven't watched mine yet. I'm sure there's some heavy grain, but that doesn't usually bother me |

There is a fair amount of grain. Okay - heavy grain, but that grain is indicative of the original film - an aspect that will be revealed on many films being transferred to HD - and an aspect which the lower resolution of DVD inherently masks. Ghostbusters was held to a bit of controversy on these forums when it came out last June. Unfortunately, as resolute as 35mm film capture is, it is not always shot perfectly, and I'm sure that the quality of the film stock has to do with that as well, along with physically aging original film masters not yet transferred to digital. Funny - Shanahan is my top pick as well. The guy does know how to win. I lived in Colorado during John Elway's final years, and was greatly impressed by him. As for Jauron, I felt bad for his sudden dismissal, but he had to realize that it was coming. The whole Bills organization really needed this shakedown. |

7 hour meting with him this week. He is on the way. Right Rob? And yes we did need the Shake up.
I Digress. Some movies look really good upconverted. LOTR For example. I noticed a big difference when I watched it upconverted and the sound is already awsome. If it gets a little better I will be thrilled and hopefully it will be loads better for both PQ & AQ. |

Many players and many TVs have DNR settings. If the grain is too much for you, turn up the noise reduction setting and it'll soften the picture, removing both fine detail and also the despicable grain.

Ghostbusters always looked that way, particularly in the opening scene. Special effects and optical mattes often lead to heavier grain on the print. If you traveled back in time to 1984, it would look exactly like that in the theater.

"if the grain is too much for you"? that's like saying if one of the main characters is too much for you, mute the movie when he talks. IMO grain is as integral to the movie as a character.

I agree actually, but I know many are bothered by things like that. Others are bothered by "black bars", and I would tell them to press the zoom button. Same thing. As long as these people watching the film in a way which is wrong doesn't affect me, I don't care how they choose to alter it when they watch it.
