Default Help to set up my home theater

Hi guys, im new around here, i need your wisdom and experience to help me to set up my home theater, because i don't know any thing about speakers combinations
I already bought a Sony STR-DH500 I've had it for 6 months. I was looking to upgrade my home theater ,My setup is almost done but i need your opinion guys , i need to know if i'm doing something wrong. My home theater is mainly used for DVD, Blu-Ray and Playstation 3.

Receiver: 5.1 Sony STR-DH500
Center speaker: Sony SS-CR3000
Front speakers: Sony SS-F6000 Floor Standing Speakers
Rear speakers: Sony SS-B1000
Subwoofer: i have a active Sony subwoofer model SA-WMSP75 from a Sony HT-DDW750 Home Theater System but i will change it for a JBL ES250PBK 12" subwoofer or a Polk audio PSW505 12" subwoofer.

Please guys i really need your help, let me know if i'm doing something wrong and advise me to make the best choice to buy a new subwoofer. Thanks a lot!

So you already have the speakers or you're considering buying them?

Either way, you may want to look into the Sony Subwoofers. I have the SA-W2500, which is a 10 inch, and it really packs a wallop for the size and watts. The 12 and 15 inch models are considerably cheaper and may fit in better with the Sony speakers.

Hi krytonic,; i already have all speakers, but i need to know if this speakers(center, front and rear) is not to much power for my receiver.

Talking about subwoofers, i have a friend who say: sony subwoofer have a low and weak BUM!, BUM! even the powerful Sony SA-W3800 and he say Polk and JBL have the best and deep bum! bum! specially for watch action and horror movies that is the reason because i want to change my "old" sony subwoofer. If you can help me i will be glad to take your suggestion. Thanks

PS: When you set up home theaters the receiver, speakers and subwoofer necessarily have to be of the same brand?

I don't understand what you mean by to much power for your receiver?

Your PS questions is simple: No

Hi HAMP, sorry about my ignorance:

My Sony STR-DH500 receiver is a 100-watt 5-channel audio receiver, my speakers(center, front and rear) make a total of 680 watts plus 70 watt of subwoofer grand total is 750 watts, that is the reason because im asking ...this is not to much power to my receiver?

Noel ~ Welcome to the Forum !!

Adding the wattage up of all the speakers is not how it is done ! Your receiver puts out 100 watts A channel to each speaker .Your speakers Can handle more than that so you Have no worries with the receiver or speakers & sub .

+1

Noel, the speaker "wattage" is not how many watts they need, but their maximum power handling capability. If anything, you want it to exceed your receiver's rated watt-output.

You are alll set, and welcome to the forums as well!

I would recommend getting the Elemental Designs A2-300 for $350 shipped. It's the "best BUMP BUMP for your buck" sub out there right now, anyone on here will agree.

There's a thread on the A2-300 if you wanna take a look and see how many of us A2-300 lovers there are

I'm going to be honest, your Sony speakers are not that great. For the price you paid, they're fine. But I've tested and compared them against Polk's, and they don't hold up. I kind of think the ED sub would overwhelm your speakers to a certain degree. No doubt, the ED subs are great and if you had bought Polk, JBL, Energy, etc. speakers, I would agree, go with the ED subwoofer. But with the Sony speakers, I think a Sony subwoofer would likely compliment the sound of the speakers better. I'm not sure about your friend, because the Sony subwoofers are pretty great for the money and while they're certainly not the biggest and baddest out there, they do their job very well.

No, speakers and receivers don't have to be the same brand. The only thing that should are your front three speakers. I would recommend upgrading your center channel before anything though. The CR3000 is a puny speaker. At least go up to the CN5000.
