Hi guys, I'm using $1000 of my Christmas bonus to get a projector set-up going. I know that I'm not going to get a top of the line with that budget but I'm really picky about picture quality so I want the best I can with that budget. What do you guys suggest.
By the way I will probably end up building a screen instead of buying one so I can spend more on the projector. Right now I have a 52" sony kdlv4100 lcd, that's only 9 months old. I'm hoping that maybe a smaller electronics store will let me use it for credit towards a projector. Thanks again |

I myself don't have a projector but I've spent some time researching them since it was once a consideration for me, and I still plan to go projector someday. Look at THIS website for some very good reviews on projectors. HERE is another good site with many reviews. With everything that I've read in reviews and from the feedback in the forums my first choice of projector would be the Panasonic PT-AE4000 for $2000. I don't think there's much out there in this range that comes close to its performance. There are some good budget projectors out there between $1000-$1500 that I would also consider if you want to keep the costs low, but for excellent performance at a reasonable price the Panny would be the I'd go.

I am currently running a Sanyo PLV-Z5 (res. 720p) which is no longer made and it is has been a great unit. I average 2800 hours per bulb (on #3 now).
They have a 1080p model PLV-Z700 which has a street price of around 1395.00 which is about as cheap as I have seen for a 1080p model. The contrast ratio on it is 10,000:1 which isn't that great. Not to say it's bad either but the next model up is the PLV-Z3000 which has a CR of 65,000:1 but it also cost 1,000.00 more. Honestly I would either save a couple hundred more and go 1080p or try and find a good deal on a 720p unit. Like the Panasonic PT-AE900U or a Sanyo PLV-Z5 like mine. I have seen low hour units on ebay for less than 700.00. Keep in mind the cost of lamps and mounts and cable runs (monoprice is your friend). |

Projectorpeople.com has the Sanyo PLV-Z700 listed for $1399 but you can get a quote sent to your e-mail and the price will be $1199! Free shipping also. A dang good deal if you ask me.
This pj was around $1700 just a few weeks ago. Last edited by brokenthumb; 12-19-2009 at 11:48 PM. |

Optoma HD20, Vivitec H1080FD, BenQ W1000 The BenQ is fairly new so not many reviews but the owners seem to give it the edge over the HD20. A few more are at $1500-1400 range Mitsibushi HC3800, Epson 8100 Both are have been getting very good reviews. In the end, try to go view the units, just like TV's it's best to be able to see and touch it. |

I would wait a little while longer longer and save up a few more bucks to get a 3-lcd projector over a dlp. I think you will be happier in the long run. I love my Epson 8100 by the way. Also I would keep your Sony TV unless you will no longer have room for it, it's good to have for general watching and will help keep the hours off of your projector. If you must sell it you would probably be better off selling it on Craigslist or something vs trading it in for credit. Happy projector hunting.

Might want to check out this thread if you haven't already https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=126197
Sounds like a smoking deal if you have a Best Buy in your area with either one of these units. Sanyo PLV-Z700 or Epson 6100 $719 and $699 respectively is a crazy good deal. |
