I am not really into this 3D fad but I know some people might be. Sounds like the games (at least Wipeout) will suffer a little cause of it. |

It halves the framerate or reduces the resolution by around a third. 3D is going to be niche for the rest of the gen anyway and no game will be optimised for it.

Im not a gamer so feel free to correct me if Im wrong. The article says: Wipeout "Conversion". To me this means the the game was not designed for 3D, but was then later converted to 3D. I think the article is jumping to conclusions and future games designed for 3D will more than likely render a far better quality. I believe the same concept can be expected when movies that were never intended for 3D gets a Blu-ray 3D conversion.

I think "performance loss" is the wrong term. If any game uses more than 50% processing power in its original 2D form then it will take a hit. You can do several things to keep things looking the same. Its a bit like having to empty a cup a little and filling it back up again with something else. The content will have changed.
On wipeout HD for example - You can cut the frames in half (affecting the feel of the game) You can cut the amount of rendered graphics in half or by reducing the drawing distance (by reducing crafts/background scenery) You can cut the resolution in half but this creates a graphical hit. For a native 60hz game to run in 3D it needs to run at 120hz to get the 3D effect with all the bells and whistles. Considering WOHD is a fine tuned game anyways, its quite surprising they could milk anything further out of the PS3. In the case of WOHD, they chose to cut the frame rate from 60 to 30. But instead of 60 linear frames, your getting 30+30 for each eye. So it depends on how you interpret things. One thing is for sure, any 3D game is going to be breaking the back of the PS3 its running on. Its a bit like revving your car up constantly and never letting go of the accellerator. 60GB fans will be spinning like their been super charged. |

doesn't come as a surprise to me..HD gaming is still a baby..still very young..with still so much more room for growth..tech is constantly evolving.
There aren't even any games yet that run 60fps native 1080p.. so with 3D HD..with the added dimentions..all the rendering..there will be sacrifices at the present |

Developers will get smarter at only doing the necessary extra rendering and rendering techniques will evolve not only to improve performance when 'doubled' but also believability of effects. According to Mark Cerny, large 2D particle effects like dense smoke clouds don't look right in S3D.
Off the top of my head Ridge Racer 7 and plenty of simpler PSN games like Critter Crunch are 1080p60, WipEout HD has a dynamic framebuffer between 1920x1080 and 1280x1080. |

Why would they force something on you that your current TV wont display?
Think about it. CGI's prerendered on farms of computers, the bulk of the extra processing load on PS3 comes from decoding, displaying twice the number of frames. Last edited by Shin-Ra; 04-28-2010 at 02:22 PM. |
