The only two movies I know of from this director are "Battle Royale" and "Tora! Tora! Tora!." Battle Royale is supposed to be a cult classic, although I've yet to see it myself. Tora! Tora! Tora! depicts the bombing of Pearl Harbor; pretty good movie IMHO.

Battle Royale. However, most copies of the film that are out there is bootlegs. The official Japanese DVD does not have English subtitles. There's a UK, South Korean, Hong Kong, and Thai DVD that has English subs. The Thai DVD is supposedly in Full Frame, so avoid it. The UK is in PAL and I hear the ghosting of the extra frame makes it rough to watch.

He did some pretty good stuff back in the 70's. The Yakuza Papers is really good. It's actually five movies that are kind of the Yakuza version of The Godafather as it follows a crime family through a couple of a decades. He did a bunch of other Yakuza crime films and I've seen a few, and he's done a bunch of movies with Sonny Chiba which is how I got started into watching his films.

The Yakuza Papers is essential. Battle Royale would come in second.

He also did Virus: Resurrection Day, which is just known as Virus here in the US. The full, uncut Japanese/English version can be found in the Sonny Chiba Action Pack with Golgo 13 and Bullet Train. Virus is also in the Public Domain here in the US so there's some cheap dollar bin copies out there. Avoid these; they are in Full Frame and it's the US Edit which removes about an hour of footage from the film.
