Default PS3 Optimal Video Settings

I am new to the board so I have not had time to really get into all of the posts but I was very curious about one thing and actually have a question about watching standard DVDs on the PS3.

My first observation is that standard DVDs don't look as good on my PS3 and 1080i HDTV as they do on my regular DVD player using the HDMI cable. I tried all different types of settings using the DVD Upscaler and I don't see any difference when I A/B certain DVDs. Perhaps I am not setting it properly or is it just that the PS3 does not play a DVD as well as a standalone DVD player. How are most of you setting up your PS3 to play back standard def DVDs? I do have the most current up to date version by the way on my PS3. I have Full selected as my DVD Upscale option and I don't have any of the noise reduction things turned on and I am running my PS3 into my HDTV via HDMI cable by the way.

I reccomend using your dedicated DVD player for regular dvd. I use my Oppo 981HD along side my PS3. The PS3 is not as good as the DCDi chip in my DVD player.

Thanks, I will keep using my dedicated DVD player then for SD and my PS3 obviously for BR.

You should have it set on normal, not full. From what I've read, the Oppo the previous poster mentioned is one of, if not the best, upscaling DVD players on the market, however I have seen some people who say the PS3 is just as good or better, and some who say the Oppo is definitely better. I guess it's what your eyes see, but you should have the upscaler set to normal, not full. Full, if I remember right from when I was playing with it, won't even give you a "full screen" image . . . I think I remember it giving me bars on the side, leading to a "boxed" image.

Yes, when set to "Normal" I get black bars on both side and it appears to look more like a 4x3 pic, atleast when watching Perry Mason boxset. So, that is the best way to set it?

What about Noise reduction and the other option, you have those set to Off?

The Perry Mason box set was shot in 4:3 and will automatically display the correct aspect ratio. I played around with the noise reduction options and didn't see much difference, so I just left it off.

I also have both, and the PS3 is better than the Oppo. However, if you watch allot of DVD's then use the oppo, less tair on the PS3, but the ps3 does not suffer from macro-blocking which the Faroudja chip is known for. Both are excellent as DVD players
