Default What's the point of 720?

That's the point of 720? I think it's an annoying half-way step to 1080 which just causes more confusion for the consumer, and annoys people who have 1080 TVs and find out that some shows are only going up to 720!

I think they should only broadcast shows in 1080, people should be able to buy 720 TVs if they are too poor to afford a better one, but don't lower the quality of the source material for everone

Here's a list of TV shows in HD:

720 Shows include Desperate Housewives, Lost, and 24.

It cost money & there is that 'little' thing bandwidth restrictions. & 720p tv has nothing to do with "being poor" most plasmas are only 720p & there going for $2.5k for a 42"

Broadcasting companies do not choose a resolution based on how much it will annoy their customers. There are lots of reasons 720 is an option: frame rates, storage and decoding requirements, etc. You really should do your research before posting a rant like this.

Lightbulb Why 720P?

What I have researched is that 720p is better for live fast moving sports. While 1080i seems better at close-ups, long range action shots like for football or soccer look better in 720p. You are correct, not every HD channel broadcasts in 1080i, several choose to use 720P. The type of TV to get then is one that can process numerous input signals: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and for Blu-Ray DVDs, in 1080p.

That would be 720p at 60 frames per second, so thats why it's preferred for sports and that sort of stuff. (But a movie in 720 is still a 24fps movie.)

Anyway I think a true full 1080i60 deinterlaced optimally would be better overall. Non moving objects resolution would be higher and moving objects resolution would be similar if not equivalent.

But thart's kind of hard to come by for the time being.
