Default 1080p on a 720?

So I apologize if this is a repost. I did search and couldn't find anything...

Anyway, I just got a Sammy 32" 720p TV today, and was setting it up with my PS3. The PS3 auto detected best settings and recommended 1080p, which wasn't a surprise to me b/c I know 720p TV's will just dilute a 1080p signal down to 720p. But, when I took a look at the resolution my TV was displaying (by pressing the info button) it said 1920 x 1280 @ 60 hz.

Is this possible? I got the TV from BB and they said it was only 720p, the manual doesn't say anything about that, it actually does mention 1080i though. Heres the exact model:

I'm skeptical that the TV is actually showing 1080p, but why would it say it is running at 1920 x 1280 then?

Some TVs can do this. Hitachi, Akai, and I guess, your Samsung. It'll display images at 1080p, but not without severe pixelations. So, yeah, it's 1080p at 720. LOL. I'm not sure how this works as well, but hey, you get what you can, right?

Most times, pictures will be crisp and clear, details are resolved, but really fine details is where you will find problems. Hair, for example, will shine in one frame, and matte the next. Letters are prime example. Watch I Am Legend and wait for the title to come up. Once it starts zooming in, you can see the letters' edges "moving". This is due to the pixels--not enough to keep the details steady as you'd see on 1080p sets.
