Default Feedback when sub cable is touched...

Alright... Last night right before bed, I dropped something behind my SVS sub. When I reached back to pick it up, I touched the sub RCA cable and thought the sub was about to blow up. It was the loudest feedback I have ever heard. The sub cable is a 35' Monoprice Premium RCA cable rated to in-wall. I also have a 6' sub cable going from my Denon Sub Out to the wall. There is no feedback when I touch that one.

Any thoughts on my issue? Is this bad for my sub?

My first instinct is that your touching the cable created a grounding issue that generated feedback.

Perhaps your sub cable's shielding isn't sufficient? I've never encountered that sort of feedback when handling my sub cables before.

About 10 years ago, I used to connect the built-in 15" subwoofers in my front Definitive Technology speakers with premium 15 ft RCA cables. I had exactly the same problem. Everytime I touched them, I could hear explosions in the my room. Although it happened a few times over the years as I was tweaking my system, there was no damage to the speakers/subwoofers. A couple of years ago, I finally replaced the cables with RG6 subwoofer cables and the problem went away. I can move the cables and there is no noise.

Unfortunately, I heard a buzz from my front speakers a few weeks ago. I haven't been able to isolate the noise. I believe there is a rat in my HT room and I need to buy a gun.

I may need to invest in a new cable (although I just bought it about two months ago from Monoprice). It is their top of the line RG6 RCA cable. Maybe I need to look into Blue Jeans.

I know I should not have watched the Ratatouille movie.

This is the fate of all rats in my HT room.

I just tested something. I removed the Radio Shack Y-splitter and the feedback went away when I touched the sub cable. I either need to use one input on my sub or get a better quality Y-Adapter.

Good to hear you found the cause of the feedback.

Check post #2 of A Guide to Bass Management for links to high-end Y adapters.

One thing to keep in mind is that your body does contain electricity. When you touch a cable, you are sending an electrical signal to the sub. I have touched sub cables and made them hum, but never a loud explosion as a couple of you have mentioned. Very interesting.
