India/Bollywood Pricing of Bollywood Blu rays

This thread is not a war thread. It is just to understand how Bollywood blu rays are priced across the world.

I do undersyand that each company has different pricing policies for different regions but while going through the 3 bollywoodbluray website I noticed the following - I used only YRF, Eros, Big Home and UTV for analysis

India: Of course things will be cheapest here(forex conv factor)
Yash Raj Films - Between Rs 599-700
Big Home Video - Rs 649-900
Eros - Rs 949 - 1499 - Most expensive ones
UTV - Rs 999 - 1499 Similar to Eros
Note:
YRF most competitive and great prices
Big Home - Next to Yash Raj and still good price
EROS and UTV too high

USA:
Yash Raj Films - Between $22.99 - 23.99
Big Home Video - Between $23.99 - 24.99
Eros - Between $23.99 - 24.99
UTV - Between $24.99 - 25.99
Note:
YRF most competitive but not by much
Discs from all houses nearly simialr price range

UK
Yash Raj Films - Between £12.99 - 15.99 (£15.99 for most)
Big Home Video - Between £15.99 - 17.99
Eros - Between £16.99 - 18.99
UTV - Between £17.99 - 18.99
Note:
YRF is slightly low priced compared to others
Rest are in the same price range

If you look closely,
1. YRF is cheapest in India and in many case less by 50% but they are very close to others in UK and USA.
2. Some Eros/UTV discs in India are more expensive than the same in US or UK

My point here is if all bollywood blu rays are authored from the same location (I tend to think that way). the productions costs should be the same. While YRF is selling their discs as fantastic price in India but their overseas prices are nearly same as the rest.
It could be that YRF is promoting Blu ray in India and their competitive prices are to ensure Blu ray is welcome in most households and the format popularity increases - if this is true then it is a very good strategy from YRF and kudos to them. Shame that Eros and other haven't done that yet.

On the other hand I would like to see the price of Bollywood Blu rays going down in UK and US as well. Most of the hollywood blu rays (except the just released ones) can be had in the UK for £6-£10 and I will be happy if Indian blu ray prices can be reduced as well. Yash raj has shown that it can be done in India (of course they are still making a profit after selling discs at Rs 599 in India).

If a disc can be produced at X amount, each production house can stil make a profit and give some discount to the consumer to make the format popular and more people will start buying.

I go to India every year and my friends or family members visit me 2-3 times a year. I am currently buying bolly blus from India as they are very cheap, but at some point I would like to contribute to the economy of the place where I am living (Uk) by buying it from people who are selling in the UK.

I don't expect the blus in UK to be of similar price as in India cosidering the forex rate but the difference should not be that high.

Some Eros/UTV/Excel discs are currenlty cheaper to buy in UK. If that can be explained, I assume YRF can reduce their prices in UK and still keep it higher than India and make a good profit.

Anil,

Do you mind sharing your thoughts on how the price strategies are made and what can we see in future with the format gaining populairty amongst Indian consumers in and outside India?

Those prices don't seem too bad (I'm in the USA). One movie I am looking to get is by YRF. It will cost me $28 dollars which includes shipping. Not too bad. I don't make a habit of buying expensive movies like that though. Only ones I really like.

Not to sound like an uninformed ass or anything (lol ) but everything I have seen on tv and the like leads me to believe India's residence do not have a lot of disposable income, if any. Is that right or is it just like the USA here? You have Upper, middle and lower class?

OK
Let's compete prices of Bollywood Blu-ray products and Hollywood's
(No. Actually including whole Indian Film Blu-ray products)

If we recent released with Hollywood Blu-ray product,
we all know that's sooo wrong.(but we already know)

For instance, price of "District 9" is $19.99(amazon)
and other price of recent Hollywood product are around $20.

It means Indian Blu products catch up with the price.
But, so ridiculously the quality is so different.

Ok. that is some reason (I guess)

1. The range of influence of Indian Blu products are quite limited than Hollywood's. So price of production is more expensive than Holly's.

2. Now, India, they improve thier Blu-ray technologies. So there might be "Tech Foundation Price" // So, in the near future, price of India Blu's will down. (Hollywood can make mass production)

But, even though this condition, these price policy is not fair.

1. Why don't they make/pour any effort "Marketing"
especially "Lack of Special Feature"

Have you been seen like "director's commentary" in India Blu? (even DVD)
I can count the titles like "Om shanti Om", "Taare Zameen Par"(DVD yet), "Love Aaj Kal"(DVD yet)

How about other features,
compare Hollywood's one, no, even other countries product.

At least Yash Raj co. have concerned for those effort, but...

(No tin case product, limited edition. But those are OK yet. Because users are limited.)

Final Question. really fair price? or Monopolious shakti?

You paid $28 for a YRF movie...Too expensive..Guess you didn't read the threads before you purchased one. Nehaflix was and is selling the YRF movies for $16 a pop.

I have one indian blu-ray movie and that is DDLJ. I don't intend on buying anymore cause of two reasons. One it is too expensive and two the quality sucks. I have alot of hollywood movies on blu-ray and just compare two together and you notice the major in quality both picture and audio wise. These companies will never and i will never support them. It has been the same way with vhs, dvds, and now blu-ray and i know expect it to change anytime soon

I didn't pay $28 for anything yet. I said that's what it will cost me to get my YRF movie - Dil Bole Hadippa. Bollywoodblu-ray.com was the cheapest place I found it. Nehaflix.com does not have it available as an option unless I missed it. Was not on their site.

So, if would like to point out where it is on their site for $16 dollars, I will be happy to take a look at it.

Yes, I read the threads.

if you want to compare then compare new york bd with hollywood ones.....ddlj is a old movie released in 1995 with dolby sterio mixing not 5.1.......that time standard of movies was not-up-to the mark in technical aspects bt now its good...........

Cant compare the prices in India and US. You have to take purchasing power into consideration. In capitalistic markets, prices are set on various factors including purchasing power. That is the reason we in the US pay more for medicines, books and even the ticket to a desi movie

According to some review, unfortunately BitWel products are notorious for "Upscale Blu-ray".
There's no hope. don't expect.

I bought BitWel's "Queens of Langkasuka" and "Bangkok Dangerous", both PQ is much better than DVD, and I do believe that the PQ would be better than most of my blu-rays, how come you got such an information? Besides, the R2 DVD of both movie, they are much expensive than the
two blu-rays I bought, so I would like to pick blu-rays instead of DVD.
