Default Onkyo 605 pcm or auto question?

Ok question got my 605 onkyo and my sony bdp-s300 now I have a choice on my blu ray player for pcm or auto for audio output. When I do pcm I get multichannel pcm lite up on my reciever only no matter what. But When I do auto on the sony blu ray player, and pop in a blu ray disc with 5.1 pcm and true hd it looks like it defaults to 5.1 DD for the sound. So my question is will I have to change back and forth for say a dvd to auto and then pcm only for blu rays that have pcm on them? Is pcm the best I am capable of getting with my set up?

when set to auto, and you select the Dolby TrueHD audio track, it will send the core 5.1 dolby digital stream.

Unfortunately the Sony BDP-S300 cannot internally decode TrueHD...like many other bluray players can.

There really is no inherent difference between setting PCM and Auto...they will get the job done with the same quality audio. In your situation it would be ok to keep Auto. When you select the Uncompressed PCM track from the disc, it will "auto"matically send as Linear PCM signal (no if's and's or but's about it).

...oh yes, and about your reciever lighting up "Multichannel"...it will always do that for a PCM signal...when set to Auto, its almost the same as calling it bitstream (except when Uncompressed PCM track is selected), this will send the raw native audio to the reciever so the reciever can decode, in which case instead of "Multichannel" displayed, you should see the native format being displayed...DD 5.1,DTS 5.1 etc

Confusing, I do notice a difference in sound quality though from either choice. Why do they even bother giving you a choice if it the same and just looks different on you reciever?

...well, because some people with high end audio components would rather let their equipment do the work instead of it already being done inside the player first...

I know its confusing and kinda retarded...
