Default My Panny BD30 kicked the BUCKET after 2 years!

I am pretty disappointed about this!

My Panny just won't recognize some blus anymore. I have tried the discs on other players and they play fine. I even opened up the case and blew canned air on the lens. Nope! So it's dying a slow death.

Anyway, a player only lasting 2 years is really bad to me.

Anyone else having this issue? I mean how many years are your players lasting??

I am getting an Oppo to replace it, hopefully it'll last longer!

My Panny BD10A wasn't a perfect machine either, but I figured that's what I get for being an early adopter.

It froze up during warranty, had to send it back, at least they did a great job of fixing it and getting it back to me very quickly. It still works but I got fed up with it being kinda twitchy (and with that freaky fold-down front panel) on some discs with the menus etc., so recently I replaced it with the Oppo.

My first blu-ray player the sony bdp-s300 lasted about 1 year and 3 months before it stopped recognizing blu-rays, it did however recognize dvd's for about another 3-4 months after that. Then it crashed out completely. I replaced it with a panny bd-30 as soon as it stopped reading blu-rays.

My panny bd-30, i have had now right around the 2 year mark give or take a month or two, i have been without dvd playback on it for sometime now. Probably almost a year, however it is still reading blu-rays although it makes some crazy loud bad noises while loading. It also has problems reading some discs, although after a few tries it takes so i expect a complete failure sometime soon.

I have never had this kind of problem with a dvd player before, well aside from my ps2's which crashed out like crazy. I am considering going with something a little better quality component and build wise like the oppo, but i have a hard time given my history of blu-ray players dropping that amount of money and hoping the same thing does not happen again.

Sounds like Panasonic isn't too good with the longevity then..

Oh well, it was solid while it lasted!

Had a Panny BD-35 that lasted a little over a year. I never liked the Panny as it had extremely slow load times, although I never had a problem with it not reading a disc. Replaced it with a Sony 460. I am much happier with it and I will never buy another Panasonic player again. Granted most players are priced so that you can replace them, but longevity needs to be built into all equipment regardless of price. I guess the moral here is don't buy a Panasonic, but thats only my opinion.

I bought 4 Blu Ray players in the fall of 2008.

Sony 350
panny bdp30
sylvania
samsung 1500

All 4 are still working perfectly, even the Sylvania works seamlessly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed !!!

Default Down and Up...

I had a problem with my Panasonic BD30 where it would not recognize ANY disc be it Blu, standard DVD or a CD. It kept saying an error message. It was a drive failure that was commonplace with the model. Fortunately, it was under warranty. I sent it to an authorized Panasonic service center. Drive replaced...been working fine since. I upgraded to an Oppo BDP-83. The BD30 is with my folks now...

I bought a Sony BD-S300 in July of 2007. It crashed and stopped reading discs a few weeks ago. So it worked a little over 2 years and 7 months. Like others here, I was disappointed with the relatively short life span of this player, especially since I paid $400 for it! I recently replaced it with a Panasonic DMP-BD65. Hearing all these bad stories about Panasonic has me worried now! If I had the money I would have gotten an Oppo.

Not only has my other DVD players had more longevity, but so does my Pioneer laserdisc player and JVC VCR! I had a Mitsubishi VCR that lasted ten years before it broke! My parents still have the one they purchased in the mid 80's!

Yeah I still have a cheap Sony DVD player from 2000 and it still plays.

I have a BD30 as well, for the life of me I can't get it to play Tropic Thunder on Blu-ray, have tried three copies and none will play. Also have had problems with it playing "burned" DVD's and other Blu-ray movies as well. I had bought the extended warranty through BB, five years from date of purchase, I plan on making it last until Panasonic's offerings this Fall, or maybe early 2011. The new BD85 is out, rather inexpensive and faster loading time and better video processors than my BD30 but I don't know if I fall for that .5 second load time they are claiming.

I have the BD65, and it's fast! I haven't timed it, but it seems like a few seconds after I press the power button, the machine is ready to load a disc into.

You're joking right?
I had a Sony S300 that made my Samsung BD-P1200 look like it loaded like a DVD player and my BD30 like it was blazing fast.
The BD35 was faster than the BD30.

Hope your Sony lasts.

btw:
My BD30(turned 2yrs old in Dec.2009) & BD35(turned 1yrs old in Dec.2009) are both working just fine for blu-ray and DVD. I just got a BD65 and it's even better. Panasonic never disappoints with their players and support for them.

On the BD30, some just got bad drives and they fail after a while.
I believe Panasonic will replace the drive for $40-50 since it's out of warranty.

i've had my bluray player for about a year now. not looking to get anew one wtill 3D bluray comes out and is at a affordable price so another 2 years or so .. thats what i expect from it. even so i will am likely to buy a sony again or a LG.. anyone ahve probs with LG machines?
i have my LG dvd player bought in '08 so its almost 2 years old, maybe bought mid 08..

had a pioneer dvd player that went kaput after a few years early 08 after that had a palsonic that refused to play some discs. the pic quality was grainy as was a DSE brand that wouldn't eject after a while the door refused to open.. my first dvd player used to freeze up when u paused and slow mo/frame advance it.. or used search alot.. it pixelated discs or refused to read some too.

time line

Aug '99: Panasonic DVD sold or gave it away some time later, in '04
Late '03: Pioneer DVD{ came region free}
04: bought a PS2 platinum

05/06: a DSE DVD {region free after using a code to go to region set up menu}

later in 05: bought a Sony wide screen tv set..76cm
pretty cool !!

May/June 07: bought a sony HT system 5.1 off the showroom floor for 300 bucks.. still had my pioneer dvd , it stuff was sweet..good sound coming from it..

Early '08: Pioneer DVD screwed up/ stopped working, had a DSE DVD in reserve, why, coz it had 5.1 analog output and had a analog cheapo HT system..for it..

Mid 08: DSE DVD player stopped ejecting discs, put it aside AND got a cheap dvd player-Palsonic(DVD reg-free), it refused to play some stuff and was annoying..

Later in 08: bought an LG DVD player {out of the box dvd reg-free}

Late Jan '09: bought a LCD HD TV LG

March (approx) 10/20th '09 : bought/brought-home ,sony Bluray BDPs350

I would steer clear from LG & Samsung blu-ray players. They just don't seem to hold up or have the product support. For blu-ray players, stick with Panasonic, Pioneer & Sony.
Oppo is good as well if you want to pay 2-4x more than the 3 major brands.

Dunno about the longevity, but I'd agree with the fellow who said his Panasonic BD-player has arduously slow loading times (I have a BD60). Just yesterday I got tired of it and vowed never again to buy another Panasonic BR player. From the looks of this thread, that day will come sooner rather than later...
