Default Epson, might be my only choice.

I just came across this sale on Futureshop. It is showing as $899 on the website but this projector is on sale in the flyer for $599

It doesn't say if it's 1080p or not. Is this because it's not really for movies? I really want the optoma hd200x, but my wife is not biting. This may be my only chance to get a projector.

Can anyone give me any more info on this projector? Mainly if it would be ok for movies and if it is 1080p or not. Thanks

The projector is an WXGA projector (16:10 720p basically) and the model is designed as a business projector. This is however a great LCD projector for the price, and great for ambient light even for large screens. I would approach the Optoma HD20 with caution if you are rainbow sensitive, but that is also very bright for a projector in it's price range.

I dont know anything about this projector other than the information from the link you provided. It says the resolution is 1280x800, so in other words 720p.

The problem with using a multimedia projector as a home theater projector is that they are designed to be very bright--meaning lower contrast ratios. The ones I have seen have horrendous black levels.

If you go for something like this I would recommend using a low gain grey screen.

Epson projectors are excellent and Epson has very good customer service. Periodically, they have sale on their replacement lamps and you can buy them real cheap.

If you are planning to buy an Epson projector for home theater use, you should buy one of these.

From the specs over on projectorcentral.com this projector appears to be pretty flexible although it is geared towards business uses. At 2500 lumens with a 2500:1 contrast ratio its pretty similar to a lot of entry level home theater projectors. I myself am using a business oriented projector for home theater and works pretty well. Don't expect the deepest blacks on earth, but you can adjust these projectors very well for movie purposes.

A lot of these are actually designed to be flexible enough for these purposes since even in business use there is a need for movie playback. My projector for instance has a Cinema setting which is what I keep it on. I also run my projector on Economy mode which brings the lumens down further, and I'm pleased with the results. On a budget the Epson is a good option plus you are looking at a 5000hr. lamp life on Economy mode.

You can look HERE on projectorcentral.com for more info on it. They have direct links to the product sheet and the user's manual in PDF format. I took a look at both and Epson does specify that this projector is for presentation and movie usage. The projector has a Theater mode in the menu for use in a darkened room.

There are some other options around for that price though...well at least here in the US. I don't know what's available in Canada, but you should also take a look at the Optoma HD66 and the Acer H5360. The Canadian versions may have different model numbers. Both of these are $660-700 shipped here in the States, and both are home theater projectors with the newer TI DLP chipsets that produce very nice blacks.

If you can get your hands on either of those in that price range you should jump on one of them. I still think the Epson will be just fine if you are limited to that option, but the other two would be preferred.
