I belive they will release the movies on BD after there exclusive agreement is up with HD DVD, they would be stupid not to release them on Blu Ray also, but who knows. Maybe Josh does.

There is no reason that contract should be effective until the 18 months are done. If BD wins the format war by the holidays, i don't see why we should wait 18 months. KEEP AN OPTIMISTIC MIND TO THIS.

They have to say it's indefinate, they could extend it past 18 months if both partys agree. Plus if they said "we are going HD-DVD exclusive for 18 months" it would have been considered a joke.

Think of it as renting an apartment, you sign a 1 year lease, but that doesn't mean you will move out, you may sign another. Or you may not.

I hope that Bluray picks up enough momentum that in 18 months, they become a more lucrative option for Para*****...

If things remain as they are now however, I don't see Paramount switching over to BD. You have to remeber that with this little switch, they have proven that they are in it for nothing but the all mightiest of dollars, and if there wasn't enough now to keep them interested, lets hope there is in 18 months.

As much as we would hate to admit it, the Godfather trilogy could be the straw that broke the camels back in HD-DVD's favor. The first Godfather is largely considered to be one of the, if not the best movie ever made.

While we do have the lead now, all things considered, we have not yet hit anything near mass yet. All it takes is one title, or maybe a series of titles to prove that that format is a NEEDED upgrade to J6P, and The Godfather could be it...

Copolla needs to keep it neutral....

Let's be realistic though guys. We all thought that HD DVD would have been dead before it even started, but it wasn't. We then thought that by this time HD DVD would have died off and retailers would have stopped selling HD DVD, but it's still here. In 18 months if HD DVD is still doing well there's a possibility that Paramount and DreamWorks might stick to being HD DVD exclusive.

Of course they'll have to release them, along with everything that they have because in 18 mos there will be no HD DVD. What are you thinking?!!!

BTW, welcome to the forums!

It's here in an article by the NY times. I also believe that the WSJ stated the contract was for 18 months.

There are all kinds of opportunities for outs in that contract. If the numbers don't meet minimums it's null and void (probably have to return a bunch of the cash tho)

You forget that they didn't officially receive any cash. You can't return what you didn't get in the first place. To return the cash would be an admission that they got paid off.

Their contract keeps them exclusive for two holidays. It's a decent move, because the 18 months will be over at around February 2009, but they'll still get some benefit from the prior Christmas season, as most will not know then that the exclusivity will fall away. So they clear out their HD-DVD stock Christmas 2008, break even or make some profit, then drop the format 3 months later. Sounds like their kind of sleaze.

Seriously I don't think any one title can swing the war, especially something like the Godfather which is quite old. I'm sure it's a great movie - but I'm 28 and have never seen it, how many others in my generation have never seen it?

If people say Star Wars (6 movie series vs 3, newer than the Godfather, and heavy on SFX = good for HD) couldn't outright win it for us when we already have an advantage, I don't see the Godfather doing the opposite...

BTW, AFI ranked Godfather #3 on the all time best list.. http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/movies.aspx
