Default westinghouse vs samsung

my friend bought a 26" Westinghouse HDTV. I watched a blu ray on it and it looked pretty good. I have a 32" Samsung. To me his pq looked practically as good as mine. Is it me or is the pq on his Westinghouse just as good as my Samsung.

I'm going out on a limb and saying both TVs are 720p? There are a lot of variables at play here. You might need to be a little more specific about the model numbers of the TVs you're comparing. Also, comparing TVs of different sizes like that won't always yield satisfactory results either. The smaller the picture, the easier it is to hide some of the blemishes. How can you be sure that a 32" Westinghouse would or wouldn't look better than your 32" Samsung?

There might be a variable at work here somewhere.

Resolution
Source Device
Connections
Settings/Calibration
Viewing Distance
Lighting Conditions
Screen Size
etc.

I've never seen a 26" 1080p set. Not saying they don't exist, but there isn't any perceivable benefit to going from 720p to 1080p on a 26" set. The screen is too small to be able to see the additional resolution.

i have a 32 inch westinghouse 1080i which i think looks great in terms of clarity, it doesnt seem as vibrant as my friends samsung, which i like actually, probably depends a lot on the settings

I used to own a 42" 1080p Westinghouse television. It was my first TV and it was good, but somewhat disappointing to what I thought an HD TV would be like. The contrast ratio was only okay, nothing great. There were surprisingly a decent amount of settings for a lower brand TV. I went from that to a 42" 1080p LG and the differences were pretty significant. I now own a 46" Samsung and compared to what the Westinghouse offered (and the LG for that matter) there is just no comparison. The Samsung's color depth and black levels are worlds better. The adjustment setting options are much more detailed and numerous, allowing for a more in-depth tweaking of my picture quality.

I actually just watched 2012 last night on his TV. Ok movie. Pq looked very good on his Westinghouse. Went home and Popped in one of my blu rays. Then I noticed the difference in Tv's. The red warning screen that comes up when you first pop in a blu ray looked richer and more vibrant than when I saw his a few hours prior. Just that little detail I could see the difference

I hope someone with more knowledge and information corrects me, but IIRC, there are only a few actual manufacturers of LCD TVs. They are then branded by Westinghouse, Samsung, Panasonic, etc. If that is correct, there is a chance his TV and your TV came out of the same factory.

Fixed.

How those panels are utilized varies between manufacturers as each have their own technologies and additional hardware.

Samsung & Sony have a joint partnership to make their own panels.

Westinghouse is "Brand-X" from China. One of several companies where the original company went out of business and it was bought by a marketing firm to sell generic sets under a familiar brand name.

My favorite trick is to pick up a remote and see how many Brand-X sets I could control. It always convinced folks, especially when they realized the button layout and GUI were exactly the same.

You cannot compare memories of how one set looked against the other. If you were playing 2012 side-by-side you would see the difference, especially in dark scenes.

I have a friend who has a Westinghouse and she'll come over to watch certain movies on "the good TV" (my Sony).

I think the reason that PQ looks similar on the 2 TV's in question is because of the size of the screens. Generally the smaller the screen, the sharper the image will appear. I think both screens would therefore look almost as sharp as a 42" set by either manufacturer.

Back when all we had was 480i transmissions it would often appear that a 20" crt looked much sharper than a 36" crt showing the same show. IMHO That's due to the fact that the images have to be blown up for the larger screen often showing imperfections not viewable on the smaller set.
