Default Another Developer Backing PS3

GRAW team denies PS3 is hard to develop for
Posted on August 17th, 2007 at 12:10 EDT
Co-founder of Ubisoft’s Tiwak Studio, Yann Lee Tensorer, has played down suggestions that the PlayStation 3 is more difficult to develop for than rival machines, insisting it is simply a case of developers needing to familiarize themselves with the consoles hardware.

"It's wrong to say it's harder to code on the PlayStation 3, it's just something that needs to be learnt," offered Lee Tensorer, who stated, “It’s not harder to develop on the PS3 than it is on the 360, it's just a different console. Developers might say it's harder because it just takes time to understand the technology, we're still early in the lifecycle."

He observed that developers must acquaint themselves with the machine’s architecture much like with PlayStation 2, adding, "We need all developers to learn from the console, it was the same with the PlayStation 2. Our team are more than happy with the PlayStation 3."

Elsewhere, Ubisoft’s international brand manager, Adrian Lacey, briefly touched on the studios highly extolled Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, stating, “Because we built the engine for this generation of hardware we've been very well placed – Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter hit that level of quality early in the cycle when the 360 first came out because we had our engine in mind for PS3, 360 and PC from the very beginning.”

Lacey observed how the team are becoming more acquainted with PS3’s hardware as development moves forward with the forthcoming movie tie-in, Beowulf, adding, "For us it's been a learning curve and technology changes very quickly. We're learning step-by-step to use the PS3 to its fullest capacity.”

Finally, he drew contrast with Sony's PlayStation 2 console, observing its critically acclaimed title God of War - a game that made full use of the machines power, albeit almost six years into its life cycle. "If you take the PS2 for example, when God of War come out people saw it was tremendous. But it wasn't until the end of the PS2 cycle that we've seen the machine being pushed to its fullest," he said.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is due out on PlayStation 3 later this month; expect a full review here at PSU.

I really don't see why people should worry if the PS3 is hard to develop for since that is no excuse as to why a certain companies games sucks...If XYZ company is complaining that a console is hard to develop for then I guess the developer had better start learning how to write code for it or their game will suffer in sales. It's not the average joe's concern.

its nice to see support for the ps3. You don't learn new technology over night. It takes time and they appear committed to learning the technology. I own/operate Apples Final Cut Studio 2 on my computer. Did I sit down and instantly sweep the floor with all aspects of it? No. I took time and when it was hard I kept at it. Which is what ubisoft has done. They are working with the new technology and in turn the quality of games should go up. There are a few games on my radar from ubisoft that I have a chance to buy on either the ticking time bomb or sleek sophistication. It is that commitment that makes me go with sleek sophistication.

Finally, a developer saying what I've been trying to explain to some of my friends since I bought my PS3 back in January. Heheh, and they thought I was just trying to justify my purchase.

I've heard a lot about how it's hard to program for the ps3. Not really true. I think that sony is supposed to help all developers with the hardware.

Sony is doing their part.
I saw a interview with (I believe it was) Ted Price stated that sony gives developers everything they need all the software and tools to utilize it to even 3rd party devs. he stated that sony is giving way more than they have to.

I will try and find a link it was posted/linked at myresistance.net I tried to search for it but came up with nothing.

Glad to hear that sony is doing that. Before the ps3 launched, I read a website article that said that one of sony's tools was finding errors in program code. I would imagine that this tool would help developers find errors in program code and fix the errors so that the developers could focus on other things rather then spend more time then they need to on errors in code. Try to find the link if you can.
