Question Thinking about the Onkyo 7.2 Channel AV Receiver

Hey Gang,

Wondering for your input. Currently I have the Sony HTIB 5.1 HT-DDW990 consisting of the STR-K990 Receiver. I am looking to upgrade to a better receiver with the speakers that came with the HTIB. I am looking at the Onkyo 7.2 Channel AV Receiver (TX-SR608) (Click Here). What are you thoughts? My current Sony HTIB Receiver doesn't support HDMI Audio and Video (only HDMI Video as an HDMI Switcher) and .2 for multiple sub woofers (which I have a Sony and Quest split currently with a Y cable).

I have a PS3 for my blu-ray movies and games. Currently it is connected via HDMI direct to the TV from where an optical cable is connected to the receiver for sound.

Thoughts?

I have the 607 and for what I have, I love it. I have everything running into it with HDMI and then one HDMI from the receiver to my TV. You can check my gallary (new pictures at the bottom) to see what I am working with.

Why? I thought they were the best right now, no? What would you suggest for a 7.2 setup?

Check your current speakers impedance(ohms) and the impedance the AVR can handle. Most AVR's will only work with 6-8 ohm speakers.

I LOVED my 606 and still do, Kinda sad my 1020-k is coming lol, but I would recommend Onkyo in a second.

****Take into account****

They do get VERY HOT so make sure you have enough space for it to breathe.

I prefer to listen to my Onkyo 603 then I do my Denon 787. Both are solid AVR's but I just like the sound I guess of the Onkyo....maybe thats why I replaced my Denon with another Onkyo.

Thumbs up Onkyo

I am on my second Onkyo ( the first one is now in my den ). I have the 608, and have been nothing but pleased with it. It does everything I need, including 3D. It sounds great, has plenty of hookups, an abundance of power and doesn't run hot. I would not hesitate to purchase another Onkyo.

This is not a productive reply at all. At the very least offer some reasons why the OP shouldn't go with an Onkyo. Your remark only reflects your distaste for the brand and nothing more.

To the OP, go out and demo it if you can. Compare some other brands as well and decide for yourself. You do need to replace your speakers should you buy a new receiver.

Those Sony HTIB speakers are more than likely 6ohm or even 3ohm as I've seen on some Sony HTIB offerings. Not only that but they will not be of very good quality and there is a real possibility of damaging a new receiver with them.

Keep that in mind. Buy the front two speakers first if you don't have the money to do all of them at the same time. Add a center channel and a sub as you can. Get your surrounds last.

Thumbs up Onkyo TX-SR608. ...Ya baby!

I'm all in for your tought of getting the Onkyo TX-SR608.
You won't regret it, these Onkyo 600 series are some of the very best values on the market (605, 606, 607 & 608). Their price/performance ratio is way up there. You did some good research already, I highly support you with your choice. Go for it!

They are junk. Mine has a dead HDMI port and also I cannot access the onscreen setup menu anymore.
They clearly have problems with the HDMI board and not just with the POS 606 model. Seems also their CS is total crap.
Look it up on Google or AVS.

I love my Onkyo 608. Very easy to setup and bright sound versus my Yamaha 663.

I have a 605 that has worked flawlessly from day one. Every company has had problem models. People think highly of Marantz and their current 5004 and 6004 receivers are dying within weeks of purchase. That doesn't discredit the entire company's products, and your issue with your receiver doesn't mean Onkyo's products are junk either.

Aside from that your cosign of the other member's post doesn't mean his post was constructive. He didn't offer any reasons whatsoever, and you are basing your opinion on one experience. With the high volume of receivers that Onkyo sells of course there will be issues that pop up from time to time. This still accounts for a very small percentage of buyers as the majority of Onkyo buyers are very happy and have no issues with their receivers.

Default Onkyo

First of all, here is my current setup:

PS3 80GB
2 Polk Monitor 60s for the fronts
Polk CS2 Center
Polk PSW505 Subwoofer
2 Sony bookshelves for the backs
Old Sony 5.1 Receiver

I am looking into Onkyo's since I've read nothing but good things. I've settled on a 707 (or soon to be 708 perhaps, although I don't know what the difference will be) since they are around the $540-$580 range.
However, a friend of mine just got an Onkyo RC180 on amazon for $540, and I would like to know which one is better since they are near the same price, and what the difference is between them (besides one being 110W per channel). Or do you recommend a better receiver for my setup for a similar price?

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

The RC180 is nearly identical to the TX-NR807, so it is a significant upgrade over the 707. This receiver originally sold for $1000. Read this review HERE of the 807. Its excellent. At the price the RC180 is going for it is one of the best deals out there right now. If you don't have a want or need for HDMI 1.4 and 3D capabilities then this is an excellent option, and there's no need to wait for the 708 or 808.

The 708 won't be as good as the RC180/NR807, and it will probably cost more than what the RC180 is going for right now. The 808 will be around the $1000 mark and offer very similar performance. HDMI 1.4 and a few other new features will be the only real gain, and if you don't want or need them then its not really worth spending twice the money for them.

Good for you if yours has worked flawlessly and I mean it. We all work hard to afford our components...

I'm basing my opinion on one experience? Are you serious? Again, check AVS or Goggle.
Of course every company has problems, no one or nothing is perfect but what bothers me is, this is clearly a known issue and a flaw in their design so they should at least suck it up and issue a recall of some sort but that's not the case. So that right there, discredit Onkyo. It's not so much about what they did wrong but it's more about what they are not doing to fix the obvious problem.
Anyway, the OP came here asking our opinion about the brand and here's mine. He and you can take it or leave it for all I care...

I do read the threads and yes I do know of the HDMI problems with the 606. That in no way means that there's problems with the 608. The 607 didn't have HDMI problems, so you can't say that there is a pattern.

You are entitled to your opinion as I am mine. Your opinion happens to be in the very small minority because the overwhelming consensus among Onkyo buyers is that they make excellent products.

I'm sorry that your experience was outside of the norm, but Onkyo has historically made good reliable products, and their track record reflects this.

I'll jump in here on the go Onkyo bandwagon. My previous 3 receivers were all Sony--until getting the 607 in November. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

Abundant features allow future expansion, and it will do everything but 3D (and I don't care about that). Not sure what has been upgraded on the 608 though.

This receiver makes my same speakers sound better than the Sony could have ever hoped for...

My Onkyo 606 HDMI board started going after 14 months. I took in for repairs and it is still not working right. One & done with this brand.
