Studio Canal now supports Blu-ray

Though VERY, VERY early days in Europe, HD-DVD is losing shelf space hand over fist, those who are HD-DVD owners tend to import.

If your a studio selling to a European audience, Blu-ray's the only viable format.

i don't think that was the point he was trying to make. he's trying to say that despite Universal's stance on being HD DVD exclusive, one of the subsidiaries is going to start making blu-rays. if there is a contract with HD DVD and universal, this could very well be a loophole, and this could be a sign of things to come. universal starts making BD through subsidiaries, when they start releasing catalog titles, they already have a little blu experience and it makes it that much easier to go neutral.

In the UK, Studio Canal's discs have all been HD DVD exclusive so far to the best of my knowledge. It would be very welcome if they started releasing on Blu-ray, including all the titles they've already released on HD DVD.

Studio Canal has been HD DVD exclusive, so this would be a sharp change in their policy.

One thing to note, a Blu-ray version of film showed up on their website earlier this year. A well known Microsoft insider was informed, and the title was eventually removed and never released. They could just be testing the waters again, to see if they can get some additional "encouragement" to exclusively support HD DVD.

I'm going to have to watch this one closely.

so heres the deal. studiocanal is owned by vivendi, and vivendi holds a 20% stake in Universal, with GE being the other 80%. so it seems as if we know that vivendi is neutral, which means that there is probably pressure on universal from vivendi to go neutral.

Studio Canal only controls European rights. A huge number of them. They co-own a lot of the Carloco library. Terminator, T2, Total Recall. A lot of Lionsgate titles

And the fact Europe/Japan/Australia are likely to be heavily Blu-ray dominant means the likes of Universal will need a work around to sell HD media in these territories.

Thats unless the US is the only market that concerns them.

Which remind me, I read somewhere that 'Total Recall' look significantly better on HD DVD in Europe in comparison to the Lionsgate edition in North America. I imagine it is the same for Terminator 2 too as well.

If they were to put them onto Blu-ray... I might consider importing them to replace the Lionsgate editions that I own as long they do look much better in comparison to the Lionsgate editions.
